If you're expecting a 500 page research tome on happiness, this isn't it. Instead, you'll find very short pages full of the best advice you've ever heard on almost every conceivable topic. Don't let the length of this book fool you. Like good poetry, every word carries meaning and depth.

Imagine a complete history of architecture where every building looks like it belongs on the back of a dollar bill. Nothing but engravings, around 750, all works of art in themselves. And you'll enjoy the exemplary design and the high quality paper.

A wasted opportunity

The idea to write an account of architectural styles and features using old engravings was an excellent one. Unfortunately this book is badly let down by not crediting and giving bibliographical reference to the sources of the fine engravings used. This is tremendously frustrating for readers like myself who are interested in seeking out the original publications and, in many cases, accessing better quality versions of the engravings which are poorly reproduced in this book. Some of the reproduced illustrations have been so much reduced in size that valuable detail is lost. The plans of ancient Beijing are a case in point. No indication is provided of buildings which have been destroyed or seriously damaged since the original 18th and 19th century artwork was produced. Neither are fanciful reconstructions differentiated from existing buildings in the antiquarian illustrations. Moreover, buildings are often shown without identifying them specifically. This fatally flawed publication is not a patch on Banister Fletcher's 'A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method.'

Like having shotguns grafted to your arms

To put it shortly, this is the simply best book you can buy if you want to learn to punch or think you need to improve your punch. At the time I write this, you can download a text version on the internet. Go to google and type in:

Obviously, no book can teach someone how to box -like they say, books can't punch back. That said, I think someone who was conciously trying to make sure their movement's were within Dempsey's guidelines as they practiced, and was rereading, referring back to this book over and over the whole time, could make a good puncher out of himself in a few months using Dempsey's book. Whatever punch you're throwing, Dempsey teaches you in a clear, detailed, systematic way, how to shift your weight so that your knuckles have the total force of your body behind them.
Dempsey was notorious for his vicious fighting style and brutal punching power (like Tyson, except that Dempsey was smart enough to confine his aggression to the ring ). This book shows the fusion between the two in his technique; how the one depended on the other. The short step he takes(the "trigger step"), to get the weight behind his straight punches, results in a pressing, advancing style. Dempsey's temperment was well suited to his method. Something he says that made me smile; discussing the disadvantages of a crouching stance, he writes, "your weight is too far forward to permit fast retreating footwork -if you want to retreat. "
If you are just starting and can't join a boxing gym, then buy an empty, $10-$20 canvas punching bag off of ebay that can hold 70 pounds. Don't buy the cheapstuff for your hands, get wraps and bag gloves from title or ringside. Be carefull with your hands to start with - they're not hard to mess up.

Much more than Historical Artifact

I discovered this book when I read Roger Kahn's Flame of Pure Fire, the book about Dempsey's reigh as heavyweight champion. What I learned in the book and subsequently was that Dempsey may be described as the first modern boxer. Dempsey knew what he was doing. He had superior knowledge about how to punch and defense. This is clearly demonstrated in the destruction of his opponents Jess Willard and Luis Firpo. Both were much larger and presumably stronger men (Willard outweighed Dempsey by 70lbs!) but Dempsey had vastly superior skills. This book discloses the wealth of knowledge Dempsey had about the physical skills of boxing. Dempsey teaches that real punching power comes from tight, short punches that utilizes the body's leverage. Dempsey shows also the bob-and-weave style that he invented and was later employed by both Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson (In fact, Tyson modeled himself on Dempsey, including shaving the sides of his head as Dempsey did for his fights). So I would highly recommend this book for its historical significance and as a learning tool.

for sensor networks and MANETs

This book's subject overlaps with the cases of a MANET [Mobile Ad Hoc Network] and a sensor network, where the latter might typically be composed of static nodes. The embedded systems of the book often have no graphical user interface like those of personal computers or cellphones.

The nodes comprising an embedded system have to talk to each other wirelessly; there seems to be no practical case where the nodes are wired to each other. So the book delves into issues like how might the nodes authenticate each other. This is a hard problem given that the obvious PKI approach consumes a lot of clock cycles and hence precious power. Often the nodes are severely power constrained. But a symmetric encryption entails that nodes know a common key. How is this distributed? Perhaps before deployment, when the network owner has physical possession of all the nodes. But after deployment, if a node is then taken over by an adversary, she might be able to get the common key and hence break the encryption.

For efficiency in communications, one chapter suggests a cross layer approach to developing new protocols. A very promising idea, as suggested from early simulations.

Don't Overthink It

This book is a great read. Like this review, it is short, to the point, and explains the key concepts clearly. I for one appreciate brevity. I am a Java/web developer looking to bypass some of what I see as shortcomings of the current JavaScript language spec. I grabbed a 30-day trial copy of Webstorm, set it up for TypeScript (the integration is really good), and was able to see clearly - with the very simple examples the book provides - how TypeScript compiles to very readable JavaScript. Even if I do not end up using TypeScript, it has already taught me a few things I didn't know about JavaScript.

This probably isn't a good book for beginners. The concepts are presented assuming you already know JavaScript, object-oriented programming, etc. If, like me, you are someone who needs to develop in the JavaScript universe, but you are missing your static typing and object-oriented abstractions, TypeScript just might be your answer. And this book can get you productive quickly.

Short and sweet

TypeScript is Microsoft extension of Javascript. So you know 80% of TypeScript already, which is the Javascript part. TypeScript adds strong compile time typing of Javascript code, which lets you add Intellisense to your code, as well as catch dumb errors. Javascript without TypeScript is like C without lint.

This book takes you through each skill that you need to learn TypeScript step by step, so you can follow along and observe TypeScript in action.

This is a short book, easy to read and follow, and you will know 99% of Typescript when you finish it.
Not bad for a thin volume.

Errata, errata, errata :(

I like their basic premise: practice the specific things you will be tested on. This isn't foolproof, of course, but I'm finding their math questions challenging (in a good way - I'm waaay out of practice) and their vocab sections seemed to have good tips too (I feel a bit more comfortable with vocab right off the bat). Lots of practice questions, good explanations and shortcuts. I like it.
My big issue is that I'm finding mistakes (like WRONG answers to questions) and misprints all through the book. But what's even more frustrating is trying to Google "Princeton Review Cracking the GRE errata" and coming up with NOTHING. I get it, nobody's perfect, but at least admit you made mistakes and make it easy to find the corrections. There is NO excuse for Princeton Review not to have this info easily accessible when it could be on their website within moments of figuring out there's a problem.

Very clear and concise. Preparing to take my exam so I will update on the score I get. I think this manual covered all the topics and useful strategies. One thing: you can't just read this and take the test. You actually need to practice the strategies. I'm generally a great test taker, but I never really had a set strategy which I'm sure is the difference between a decent score and a spectacular one.

Online access doesn't work on 2 computers I have

The online software that comes with the book doesn't work on my new Mac or my old PC. I emailed Princeton IT per the instructions in the book and they never responded. Since I bought the book for the online access to the practice tests it is a waste of money.
