About the Author
Terces Engelhart has been preparing and serving flavorful food and delicious meals since her childhood. She is interested in the healing power of food to help people who suffer from diet-based diseases, as she did. Engelhart and her husband, Matthew, opened the first location of their popular Café Gratitude 2004 in San Francisco, California. They have opened a second restaurant in San Francisco as well ones in Berkeley, Marin, and Los Angeles. The cafés, which support local farmers, sustainable agriculture, and environmentally friendly products, serve living, organic food made with the freshest ingredients possible.The Engelharts published The Abounding River Logbook as well as The Abounding River board game, both of which focus on their practice of being in abundance. In addition, they lead monthly workshops on this topic and are often asked to be guests on radio and TV shows. The Engelharts live with two of their five children in San Francisco. This Is the Gourmet Answer to Raw Foods

One of the hardest things for me to adjust to when paring down my intake of food is the adjustment of making any kind of elaborate gourmet style meal if I need to, to making something out of almost no ingredients and not even be able to COOK IT!

When I switched to primarily raw foods, my family was on the verge of Mutiny. I tried RAW IN TEN MINUTES which at first was okay, but I have a good imagination. All of the recipes started to taste the same and my family went from eating everything on their plates to making excuses to avoid dinner and eat in their rooms (stashed organic corn chips etc).

When I saw I AM GRATEFUL, I figured it might be another blonger of a book, but I decided to try it anyway. It was someone's birthday the week I got it, so I decided to make a raw dessert (strawberry shortcake) and then a baked cake for everyone else.

I never made it to the cake. Everyone went berserk over the raw strawberry shortcake.

I have made about 1/2 of the recipes in this book so far and I can say OMG it is truly FANTASTIC. Our favorites are: Marinated Veggies, Falafels, Fiery Carrot Avocado Soup, Coconut Curry Soup (Thai), Thai green papaya salad , Coconut Lime Dressing, Jalapeno mint chutney, Smokey Mole (OMG that is the BEST RECIPE EVER), Marinara with Brazil nut Parmesan cheese, Pad Thai,pecan porridge, Cinnamon Rolls, Strawberry Shortcake (with raspberries is DIVINE), German Chocolate Cake, Strawberry Apple Cobbler, and Lemon Meringue Pie.

We don't eat desserts that often, or we would have ripped through the entire dessert section.

Preparation is about that of any meal- it is not too involved on some recipes- but others, take overnight food dryer time and have to be planned accordingly.

However, I find that it works out fine in some cases to do an overnight. I am really in love with the recipes in this book. They taste AMAZING and Gourmet in quality, yet they have simple ingredients in some cases. I substitute ingredients I don't have until I can get what I need quite often.

I can not recommend this book highly enough. It is like Moosewood used to be to vegetarians years ago........

A Delicious Introduction to Gourmet Raw Vegan Cuisine

I was given this book as a gift, and I in turn, made a gift of this book to a friend, who like myself, is vegan.

One of the challenges that we vegans have is to prepare nutritious meals that are also delicious, so I am always looking for new ways to enhance the food I prepare. I enjoyed "I AM Grateful" and found several recipes that I could make right away with the tools I have in my kitchen. I especially enjoyed the "nut cheese" recipes.

There are three things I noted that make me rate it less than a five.

(1) To prepare many of the dishes, one must have a food processor and a dehydrator. I have neither, so I find that making many of the recipes is not currently possible for me.

(2) There is a lot of added sugars and fat in this cuisine, and not a lot of protein. It relies heavily on nuts and coconut (which have a lot of fat) and agave syrup for many recipes. I think for special meals and celebrations, this cuisine is ideal and delicious. But as I have begun to monitor my intake of fat and sugar, I don't see that I could eat this food all the time.

(3) It could get quite expensive to eat this way for those who are on a fixed or low income. For example, to make a quart of hemp seed milk using their recipe would cost about $17.00 to $18.00, as the recipe calls for two cups (one pound) of organic hemp seeds. Ditto for almond, hazel nut, and other nut milks.

The book is well written, informative, thought-provoking (Terces inserts coaching questions on almost every page), nicely-illustrated, and the recipes I have made have been consistently delicious. Overall, it is a wonderful book for your vegan friends.

Best. Tiramisu. Ever.

Well honestly I bought this just because I ate at the cafe and the tiramisu was for sure the best I've ever had... and it's raw vegan! (Which is not to say it's low-calorie... but it is delicious and doesn't give me a dairy hangover. In fact, It's like the best energy bar ever--it really does pick you up and keep you going.) Anyhow, back to the book--I've only made the tiramisu so far-- a bit time (and ingredient) consuming but worth it. Made a week's worth of tiramisu for 2 (I probably should have shared...). The irish moss (which many have written about in their reviews) was new to me, but I bought some on Amazon and it worked out just fine using the directions provided in the book-- just wash well, soak, and then puree well--no need to cook but you do need a good powerful blender. I did find I needed to tweak some ratios-- specifically add the coffee to the almond flour (rather than pour over in a later step as directed) to make it moist enough to mix with the date paste; added some extra water too. I also don't know if the 30 oz of almond flour was dry or fluid oz-- I would assume dry but that just seemed like wayy too much-- so i used about 2/3 of that and it came out tasty.
Other tips-- they say let it chill in the fridge/freezer for an hour between adding layers-- you need way more time than that (at least in the fridge, which is what i did. It was a wildly different (and tastier) cake the next morning once it had had time to set properly. And lastly, the whipped cream portion of the recipe makes a TON of whipped cream. I barely used 1/3 of it (which was reassuring since it's not exactly health food...) --I've been adding the remainder to smoothies. Yum

In this greatly expanded and extensively revised edition, the authors have retained most of the analytically based material that forms the pedagogical content of the first edition, and have expanded it to present the theoretical foundations of modern numerical analysis. Application of the latter is illustrated by examples that have been chosen to complement the analytical approaches to solving fairly simple problems of sound radiation, transmission and fluid-structural coupling that are presented in the first edition. The number of examples of experimental data that relate to the theoretical content, and illustrate important features of vibroacoustic interaction, has been augmented by the inclusion of a selection from the vast amount of material published during the past twenty five years. The final chapter on the active control of sound and vibration has no precursor in the first edition.

A Northern Iliad

Although most of us have heard of the Greek epics and, in particular, the Iliad and Odyssey (the two most renowned epics in the western world today), we have a great deal less familiarity with the literary tradition of the old Norse folk who inhabited the lands about the Baltic and North Atlantic in early medieval times. We've heard about the vikings, of course, coastal pirates and fighters who sprang from these folk, and about their wide-ranging adventures across dangerous and often unexplored seas. Yet we are not nearly so familiar with the Norse literary tradition which is, in some ways, as compelling and profound as the literature of the ancient Greeks which we so revere today.

The Norse saga tradition reflects stories handed down orally for generations which were finally committed to written form in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Among these works, Njal's Saga may well be the best. Like all sagas it is a prose epic (as opposed to the poetic form of the Odyssey and its kind), but with a unique rhythm and perspective which only the Norse folk had to offer. It's a somewhat bleak tale of several generations of Icelandic families whose men and women lived and feuded on the remote island of Iceland, itself only settled by expatriate Norwegian farmers and land holders from about 860 AD onward.

Here, in Njal's Saga, is a tale of hard men in a harsh land who push and pull at one another until the only recourse, in their grim pioneering culture, remains the blood-feud. And once unleashed, the blood-flow is literally unstoppable as noble heroes cut one another down until one of the most respected of all the Icelanders, the eponymous protagonist of this tale, is himself burned alive, along with most of his kinsmen, in one of the retaliatory raids which arise from the ongoing feuds. This despite the realization by the burners that what they are about to do will have grim and far reaching consequences. Yet they cannot pull back, for honor's sake, and must suffer the consequences they know they are unleashing by their actions when, at last, a vast well-spring of revenge and justice arises to overwhelm them in the aftermath of their grim deed.

In the end it is the wronged viking Kari who single-mindedly pursues and hunts each of the individual burners down, to the far corners of the earth, affording them no peace as he seeks re-payment for the loss of his wife and young son until even he is spent. This, like most sagas, is a tale of many strands and several generations and so it partakes of the literary conventions of its type -- conventions which make it a little harder on the modern reader than some would like. There are extensive character genealogies (of little interest to most of us today) and very limited descriptive text (something else some of us may miss).

There is also a decided lack of subjective points of view or of interior monologue. Indeed we never get inside any of the characters' heads and, as in Hemingway at his sharpest, must 'see' the characters for what they are based on what they do and say alone. The entire conceit of the sagas is that they are oral tales, reflecting only what people saw and remembered of the events recounted, and so they are written thus. But at their best, they are a keen, if slightly aged and clouded, lense through which we may observe the doings of real people who are driven, much as we are today, by the same needs for fame and fortune which infect the human soul in every generation. Insofar as these tales, and Njal's Saga in particular, are windows into these matters they are universal in their unraveling of human motivations. And they are great adventure besides.

Njal's Saga, especially, has it all including feuds and viking adventure and, in the end, a redeeming sense of human frailty as the need for reconciliation and forgiveness replaces the unyielding cry for justice under the eyes of heaven.

If you like the saga form, there are several good tales in this vein, that aim to reproduce the saga in a way that also works as a modern novel. I particularly like ERIC BRIGHTEYES by H. Rider Haggard; STYRBIORN THE STRONG by E. R. Eddison; THE GOLDEN WARRIOR by Hope Muntz (probably the best of the lot); and THE GREENLANDERS by Jane Smiley (a very fine offering as well). I've also done one of my own: THE KING OF VINLAND'S SAGA; but I will refrain from commenting on it since it is for the reader, not the writer, to judge.

Don't dismiss Cook's translation out of hand...

I recently became interested in Norse mythology, and after acquiring a number of books on the subject my interest spilled over into Norse, particularly Icelandic, sagas. I bought the hefty Penguin "The Sagas of Icelanders", and since all the reviewers for it lamented the exclusion (understandably, for space reasons) of Njal's Saga, I bought that separately, and I've just finished reading it.

I bought this translation, Cook's. There seemed to be two main choices, this or Magnus Magnusson's, and I noticed a few reviewers quite bluntly trashing Cook's translation, promoting Magnus's instead. I decided to start with Cook's anyway, figuring that, even if it was inferior to Magnusson's, I wouldn't know what I was missing, since I hadn't yet read Magusson's. Admittedly, I still haven't read Magnusson's translation, but I enjoyed Cook's translation very much and did not by any means think of it as lacking.

In fact, in Cook's notes on the translation presented in the book, he explains his motivation and justification for translating the saga the way he did, in a way that seems to anticipate the disfavor of his translation by loyal Magnusson fans:

"[This translation] differs from previous translations of Njal's Saga...in attempting to duplicate the sentence structure and spare vocabulary of the Icelandic text."

After giving a few examples of the stylistic eccentricities in which the saga was originally written and demonstrating how he attempted to reproduce them in his translation--even contrasting an excerpt of Magnusson's translation with his own--he goes on to say:

"It is hoped that the reader of this translation will accept--and even learn to enjoy--these and other efforts at fidelity, though they may seem strange at first. The intent has been to create a translation with the stylistic "feel" of the Icelandic original."

Clearly, Cook did not set out to create a dry, inferior translation; rather he set out to create a more stylistically faithful translation, even if it meant sacrificing some of the flare and drama to which we as modern readers are accustomed.

Regarding the story itself...what can one say? There is something immensely powerful about reading a piece of literature that was written over seven centuries ago and discovering that its author and the people about whom he wrote had many of the same thoughts, feelings, and problems that we do today. When a character responds emotionally to a situation, or feels frustrated because of a moral dilemma, we can still, despite the vast chasm of time separating us, so easily relate to him or her. Even the author's humor and wit are delightfully close to home. Stories such as Njal's Saga remind us that people from long ago and far away are just that: people. Just like us. In a popular culture that has a tendency to glorify the ephemeral, trendy Here and Now, it's a fact that's easy to forget.

Better than most modern novels

Njal's Saga is perhaps the single most important and best-known of the entire body of Icelandic saga literature. By turns a legal thriller, domestic drama, and violent revenge tragedy, Njal's Saga is far more complex and entertaining than most of the modern fiction that I've ever read.

Njal's Saga covers one of the most violent and tumultuous periods in European history in general and Norse history in particular. During Njal's long life the first Christian missionaries came to the island and, in 1000, the island voted to convert. Such a brief summation does no justice to the intense machinations involved and the often violent reactions of Icelanders and Christians alike.

But of even greater importance to Njal's story are the many feuds in which he became embroiled and which finally claimed his life. The overall arc of the stories is far too complex to be related here, but every victory that Njal achieves comes at a heavy cost of both money and blood. Throughout, the feuding, fighting, and legal episodes at the Althing are carefully recorded and uniformly exciting.

A word on the translation: Cook's translation of the saga has drawn a considerable amount of flak from fans of the more "contemporary" Magnusson translation, but such attacks are largely unfounded. Cook's aim in translating the saga was to accurately recreate the original Icelandic's terse, forthright, and completely unembellished style. Having read a number of other saga translations, I'd say this is a noble and, in this case, successful aim. This translation is exciting without catering to modern convention, something that speaks well for the power of the story regardless of translator.

My only word of warning about this book: don't put it down. If you're like me, you won't have a problem with this, but for casual readers the details of plot and the many, many characters will probably slip away should one take a casual approach to the Saga. That said, this book should draw you in and never once let go once you've begun.

Will teach you everything about TSI

Good material. If you don't have any idea about the TSI, taking tests, or have been out of school for a long time and want to go back, this book is really helpful in refreshing your mind with what you need to know. If you are generally smart and can write, read, and solve basic geometry/algebra problems w/o help, you probably don't it. Anyways, for others, this book provides a brief, thorough explanation on how to solve problems and why the "best" answer should have been selected. It's not a super big book but it's got everything you need to know in a nutshell. It helped to refresh my memory on algebra, as math is my worse subject. From my experience, the TSI test was not as difficult as I expected. It's a long test that I would recommend others to take in 2 sessions (if possible) because the reading part, towards the end of the exam, is extremely boring and drained all of my concentration. The passages they select for you to read can put the whole world to sleep..except, you can't sleep because you have to find the answer.

I plan on going to college next year. I am not a native English speaker and I've been out of school for 16 years.
I know I will be taking TSA before taking on any college classes. So, I needed some guidance.
After researching online about possible study guides I came across Mometrix TSI assessment secrets. The price was good, and I gave it a try.
This study provides me with a pretty good idea what's going to be on the test. Besides what information you will find in the book, you can watch videos in addition to that on YouTube. It's very helpful.
I am not sure if this guide will help to pass my test, but I am more confident now that I will.
My only concern is that I wish there was an essay examples included. English writing is the most difficult part for me.
Maybe adding an Essay writing video will be greatly appreciated.
Overall, this is a great product, I would reccomend this to anyone trying to enter to Texas college or university.

How and by whom were they built? This fully illustrated study aims to answer those questions using the results of recent French research on these sites, along with the insights provided by the author's own field studies. The emphasis is on the landscape setting of these monuments, and how that landscape may have influenced or inspired the construction of megalithic tombs and settings of standing stones. The development of the monuments is set within a chronological narrative, from the last hunter-gatherers of the late 6th millennium BC and the arrival of the first farmers, down to the end of the Neolithic period 3000 years later.

Kerry Greenwood is the author of more than 40 novels and six nonfiction books. Among her many honors, Kerry was awarded the Sisters in Crime's Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 at its 13th Davitt Awards for Australian women's crime writing, which joins Kerry's previously awarded Ned Kelly Lifetime Achievement Award from the Crime Writers’ Association of Australia. When she is not writing she is an advocate in Magistrates’ Courts for the Legal Aid Commission. She is not married, has no children, and lives with a registered Wizard.

Pleasing Mystery With a Feisty Protagonist

Dorothy (Dot) Williams has known Phyrne Fisher for 3 months, from when Phryne rescued her in the first tale of Phryne's escapades, "Cocaine Blues". Now she's Phryne's personal assistant, and she has her own room in Phyrne's new house in St. Kilda, near Melbourne. "Of all the presents she had been given in her short life, and they had not been many, this was the best. This space was hers alone.... She could lock her door and no one had the right to make her unlock it. Her mistress might be vain, promiscuous, and vague, not to mention prone to frightening Dot to death, but she had given Dot a great gift."

Phryne did so well at solving her first mystery that she's opened a private investigator business. Things are going swimmingly, and a new case walks in the door. A child has been kidnapped. Then, a man is murdered at his tennis court. Can they be connected?

Kerry Greenwood's writing style is to-the-point and brisk, but still does a good job with descriptions. Unless you know about planes, you might not realize that the book is set in the 1920's.

Trivia: Kedgeree is a rice and fish casserole dish. And speaking of fish, Phryne remembers a story connected with a silk painting: "It was 'Two Gentlemen Discoursing Upon Fish'. 'Look how the fish disport themselves in the clear water,' enthused one gentleman. 'That is how the Almighty gives pleasure to fish.' 'You are not a fish,' objected the other. 'How do you know what gives pleasure to a fish?' 'You are not I,' replied the first. 'How do you know that I do not know what gives pleasure to fish?'".

"Flying Too High" is the 2nd in Kerry Greenwood's "Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries" series, originally issued in 1990. She's published 20 in the series so far. and this is the first of Greenwood's books that I've read. I enjoyed it enough that I've ordered more in the book series, and am looking forward to reading them. I'm a fan of the "Miss Fisher" Australian TV series, which is why I decided to try one of the books:

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries are delightful reflections of their era - the twenties and thirties- and yet evocative of modern woman. Phryne is well-dressed, smart and liberated. Her various helpers are well-drawn and believable. I can't wait to read the entire series.

Excellent history of a Northern field artillery battery in the Army of the Potomac. This volume also sheds light on the origins of all 8 batteries that came from the 1st Rhode Island artillery regiment. Very similar situation to the Confederate Washington Artillery companies. Lots of personal touch and insights into day to day life of an artillery battery. The volume follows the battery from organization through the various campaigns of the AOP and the Sixth Corps. While the volume was a little bit pricey, I found it very worthwhile as I have a strong interest in Civil War Artillery unit history.

A great history and reference about Union Artillery & the soldiers lives

I was a bit worried about getting this book because of the price and it turning out to be a dud. This is a great buy! This covers more then just union artillery training and tactics. This covers how the AoP evolved it's use of artillery and it's command of artillery. How Rhode Island turned out the best cannoneers during the Civil War and how this group of young boys grew up and became some of the bravest and toughest of them. It is also very easy to understand the story Mr Grandchamp is telling. He does not stray to far from the lives of the cannoneers of battery G when he puts the context of what is happening around them in the AoP during the war. He only show some favoritism for the generals from RI. I do think a new reader who whats to get into the Civil War readings, this should be one of their 1st books.

Purchased this as a Christmas gift for my Mom. My Great-great-great grandfather was one of the seven members who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions with Battery G at the Battle of Petersburg, Va. on April 2, 1865. Mr Grandchamp did a wonderful job telling the history of this Battery and their bravery in this battle in particular !!

mediocre at best

Consumer behavior can be such an exciting and interesting subject. This textbook is mediocre at best. It doesn't expound on the material or examples in a way that reinforces its teaching. I am taking a consumer behavior course right now and thinking of purchasing a different textbook to supplement.
