The annual one-day conference at St Bride Library in Bride Lane (off Fleet Street) has become a popular fixture in London's graphic calendar, tackling themes such as magazine design and (most recently, in January 2010) music. The Form of the Book Book is a modest record and souvenir of the 2009 event.

Each talk is a chapter, and most work well on the page. There's a scholarly account of Le Corbusier as book designer, and a memoir of working with Herbert Spencer in the 1970s from Chrissie Charlton (above right). Armand Mevis's 'Every Book Starts with an Idea' is more preface than complete piece, and an interview with Bob Stein (about the future of the book) is a little opaque. The most rewarding chapters are by Richard Hollis and James Goggin.

Hollis's 'Ways of Seeing Books' begins with Gyorgy Kepes's views on the use of the book. After a brief swipe at Bruce Mau and Phaidon, he describes his manner of working with John Berger on G. before berating Penguin for their treatment of the reissue of his innovative, still radical book design for Berger's Ways of Seeing.

Goggin's 'The Matta-Clark Complex' is a good-humoured critique of the temptations that await the unwary (or over-ambitious) designer. This 'Complex' denotes the way designers create books whose form apes and competes with the content. Art books about the late Gordon Matta-Clark, known for his 'building cuts', make ideal case studies. Goggin's thoughtful conclusions demonstrate why he is one of the most interesting designers of his generation.

About the Author
Steve Hickner is a film director at DreamWorks Animation. He has directed the films The Prince of Egypt and Bee Movie. He has also worked as storyboard artist on Peabody and Sherman, Shrek Forever After, Over the Hedge, Madagascar, Shark Tale, and Antz. Hickner has worked at a number of studios, including Walt Disney Animation Studios and Steven Spielberg’s Amblimation, where he was a producer for An American Tail: Fievel Goes West and Balto. He recently began working on DreamWorks’ theme park and location-based projects. He frequently lectures at universities throughout the United States. About the Author
Joan L. Brown is Elias Ahuja Chair of Spanish at the University of Delaware. She teaches at the intermediate through graduate levels with courses on Spanish conversation, Hispanic literature by women, and contemporary Spanish literature and culture. Professor Brown's research interests include second-language acquisition, literary canon formation, and the contemporary Spanish novel.

Carmen Martin Gaite is one of the most honored writers of contemporary Spain and the only author who has won Spain's National Prize for Literature twice. Her best-known novel is the fantastic memoir El cuarto de atrás (The Back Room). She earned a doctorate in language and literature from the University of Madrid and has published award-winning nonfiction. She has also authored stories, poems, plays, screenplays, and mini-dramas for learning Spanish, which she named conversaciones creadoras.

Most Practical Conversational Vocabulary Textbook Ever

I rented this textbook for a college level Spanish course, but then decided to purchase my own copy to have on hand. I know, I'm kind of a nerd for this kind of thing… This textbook has a wealth of useful, everyday vocabulary, unlike some other curriculums. You will actually use the things you learn in this book when speaking Spanish in any conversational setting. I bought a used copy, as it's just for personal use, and it was a fantastic price, in the ballpark of $17. The only reason I was hesitant to give it five stars is that when I ordered the used copy, it was supposed to be in good condition, and it was written in on almost every activity page. Even with that, it was an unbelievable price for such a huge amount of helpful information and practice. As a book in general, it deserves more than five stars. If you don't mind your book being a little less than perfect in appearance, buy used. It is well worth it.

Mastering Spanish Conversation

Mastering Spanish Conversation is the subtitle of this book. While it has been a decent accompaniment for my Conversational Spanish class, it doesn't have the ability to help you master spanish conversation. Even though it claims such a feat, you will certainly have to do a lot more work than the examples in this book to achieve goals of fluency.

The above explanation is my only problem with this book. Other than that, it provides a vast amount of vocabulary. It also goes over basic grammar, in case you need a reminder. The readings are very helpful and start out very simple to progress to more difficult passages later on. Over all, I am happy with my professor's choice of this text and think that it will help me out a lot when it comes to reading/writing spanish.

This was a required textbook for a spanish conversation course I took in college. It was very helpful, the chapters were short but allowed for much discussion (which is great in a conversation class).

So writes eminent musicologist John Storm Roberts of the often-overlooked role that Latin American rhythms, musical forms, and musicians have played in shaping American culture. The Latin Tinge shows how musical trends from Spain and Africa evolved into the Cuban son, bomba y plena in Puerto Rico, Argentinean tango, and the samba in Brazil. Roberts highlights pioneering Latin American performers who popularized Afro-Hispanic music in the United States: Cuba's Pérez Prado and Mario Bauzá, for example, swung New York dancers to the beat of the rumba, mambo, and Latin jazz in the '30s and '40s. Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim combined his native country's samba percussion with jazz structures and European harmonies and launched the bossa nova craze of the mid '60s; Mexican American superstars Carlos Santana and the late songstress Selena blended Afro-Cuban, rock, blues, Tejano, and Tex-Mex folk styles into an upbeat American hybrid. This book is more or less the primer on its topic, the impact of Latin American music on the United States. There are some problems with the editing, as some of the writing is a bit convoluted and confusing. This happens sporadically, and the reader just needs to stop, go back and read again. It has been a few months since I read it, so some things about it I do not recall. However, it did further stimulate my already whetted appetite for the genre - especially its undeniable African basis.

great primer

Well written and VERY informative book. My partner is a Latin music expert (for real) and suggested that I start my mambo voyage with this book and then move on to a book my Joe Canzo about Tito Puente. The author of Latin Tinge has some organizational issues in the presentation and explanation of a few key topics. This is my main criticism of the book: some chapters should be under different titles and other chapter should be named something else.

About the Author
Robert M. Kaplan is Fred W. and Pamela K. Wasserman Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Services at UCLA and Professor of Medicine at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. From 1997 to 2004 he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, at the University of California, San Diego. He is a past President of several organizations, including the American Psychological Association Division of Health Psychology, Section J of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (Pacific), the International Society for Quality of Life Research, the Society for Behavioral Medicine, and the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research. He is a Past Chair of the Behavioral Science Council of the American Thoracic Society. Dr. Kaplan is currently Editor-in-Chief of Health Psychology and is the former Editor-in-Chief of the Annals of Behavioral Medicine. He has served as Associate Editor of the American Psychologist, and Consulting Editor of four other academic journals. Selected additional honors include APA Division of Health Psychology Annual Award for Outstanding Scientific Contribution (For junior scholar 1987 and again for a senior scholar 2001), SDSU Distinguished Research Lecturer, 1988, and Health Net Distinguished Lecturer in 1991, University of California 125 Anniversary Award for Most Distinguished Alumnus, University of California, Riverside, American Psychological Association Distinguished Lecturer, Distinguished Scientific contribution award from the American Association of Medical School Psychologists, National Leadership Award, from the Society of Behavioral Medicine in 2003, and President's Award for Career Achievement from the International Society for Quality of Life Research in 2004.

Dennis P. Saccuzzo is a professor of psychology at San Diego State University, and an adjunct professor of law at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. He has been a scholar and practitioner of psychological testing for over 32 years and has numerous peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations in the field. Dr. Saccuzzo's research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Mental Health, the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Education, the Scottish Rite Foundation, and the U.S. armed services. He is also a California licensed psychologist and a California licensed attorney. He is board certified in clinical psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP). In addition, he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Assessment Psychology (ABAP) and the American Board of Forensic Medicine He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, American Psychological Society, and Western Psychological Association for outstanding and unusual contributions to the field of psychology. Dr. Saccuzzo is the author or co-author of over 300 peer-reviewed papers and publications, including eight textbooks and 20 law manuals. He is the president and co-founder of Applications of Psychology to Law, inc, an educational institution that applies psychological science to a legal issues and the study of law.

I ordered it for a graduate level course. It is very easy to understand and the workbook really outlines the imporant issues.
