Excellent broad based intro text

This text is very clearly written, and an absolute must as a reference for the fundamentals of ceramics. The text ties basic priciples of physics to the structure and behavior of ceramics. The text is ideal for late undergrad, early graduate studies - and is also perfect for scientists and engineers without a background in Materials Engineering *because* it draws on basic physics to clearly cover the topic. Especially useful are the numerous examples within the chapters to highlight important ideas, and the last six chapters - which give important infrmation on electrical, optical, and mechanical properties of ceramics.

No Books in the Field Compare

Dr. Barsoum has covered all the bases in this well thought out and beautifully organized book! The author makes the field of ceramics interesting even to people new to the field. This book was used in a course I took, and I will not sell it because it is such an authoritative reference source. There are no other books that compare to Fundamentals of Ceramics.

Description- Picture Book/Informational
Review–“Economics of Agricultural Development” is a comprehensive textbook to understand agriculture, its development and also to get idea of the world food systems. It also throws light on environmental and human consequences of agricultural development, international trade and capital flows. The book examines causes and effects of rapid population growth, persistent poverty and malnutrition in developing countries and solutions to these problems. It also focuses on the role of globalization in agriculture, poverty alleviation and the environment sustainability. The book is divided into five parts comprising of twenty chapters. In the first part titled “Dimensions of World Food and Development Problems” issues like poverty, environmental degradation, famines, and malnutrition were examined and how improvement in agriculture, educational changes and economic development influence developing countries regarding such issues. It also discusses how limited food supply is competing with rapidly growing population and why countries remain underdeveloped. In the second part “Development Theories and the Role of Agriculture” economic transformation from agriculture into other activities and the reasons for such transformation are discussed and also including the role of growth strategies and development theories in identifying the successive stages of growth process and recognition of role of agriculture in developing countries. It also stresses the importance of some economic growth models regarding this issue.The third part of the book “Agricultural Systems and Resource Use” explains the features of traditional agriculture and its implications and diverse character. A slight discussion about farming systems and their determinants is also given.Part three also explains how natural resources are being depleted by human action like deforestation, over-grazing and pollution and natural disasters like flooding, soil erosion and climate change and also some solutions to these problems. It also aims atexploring the role of education, family structure,and gender and children roles in agriculture in developing countries. Part four of the book named “Getting Agriculture Moving” throws light on several aspects of agriculture. First it defines some theories of agricultural development and affect of costs and collective action on both factor andproduct markets.It also shows how agricultural research generates improved technologies that raises agricultural productivity and also affects factors of production. The important role of land reforms, credit programs and new inputs in boosting agricultural production has also been explained. It also explores whatapproach the global economy should be taking regarding pricing policies and marketing systems. The last part of the book (part five), titled “Agricultural Development in an Interdependent World” explains how international trade is more beneficial and efficient as per proponents of freer trade and how it is worse as per proponents of trade restrictions. It also explains how international trade should be moreaccessible by removing constraints and barriers to international trade and also highlights some influences of macroeconomic policies on prices, and market margins. It also explains the positive effects of foreign aid and assistance on agriculture research and extension in developing countries. Chapter 20 titled, “Lessons and Perspectives” summarizes the various components required for agricultural development. It also discusses future prospectus for agricultural development.

Points, author didn’t cover in the book
1) A lot of issues (poverty, population, and credit and labor market, trade) discussed in the book but given only a slight touch. They should have been explained in a more detail.
2) The book is world based but covers only a case of few countries and did not make a comparison of agricultural growth among countries.
3) It did not mention the role of modern technology in agricultural development and positive effects of population on growth.
4) It only mentioned two or three theories of international trade. There are a number of better theories which are not introduced.

Impressions and suggestions
The book covers almost all the aspects of modern agricultural development economics. It is well written and very systematically structured. A useful list of references and websites is given. The index at the end covers all the important topics.The book should be given a little more touch to make it a standard text. The topics should be explained in more detail and international comparisons be made.

Criticism:
The book has explained no doubt a lot of topics and also covers many case studies but it appears very little when we compare it book with some other books. Many important topics have not been highlighted in the book like methodological issues and governance of agricultural statistics. Organization of rural credit, impact of land reforms, administrative data and size of holdings in different countries should have been highlighted in the book. Another most important aspect that should have been covered in the book is the economic impact of agricultural research and extension on economic development of a country. There are other several important topics like information, incentives and the design of agricultural policies; and synthesis of agricultural trade economics that should have been covered.

About the Author
Harry Binswanger earned his Ph.D. in philosophy from Columbia University in 1973. He has taught philosophy at several universities, most recently at the University of Texas, Austin. An associate of Ayn Rand's in her final years, he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Ayn Rand Institute since 1986. He is the author of The Biological Basis of Teleological Concepts and the editor of The Ayn Rand Lexicon and the expanded second edition of Ayn Rand’s Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology. Book Review “How We Know” by Harry Binswanger

“How We Know” by Harry Binswanger is a book on human epistemology from the perspective of the philosophy of Ayn Rand, known as Objectivism. Covering a wide scope of information on how the human mind works and how we use concepts to come to understand the world, Binswanger starts at the perceptually self evidence, through the axioms, through concept formation, through higher-level concepts, to propositions and generalizations, to logic, and to principles; including induction and deduction; with a special chapter on free will in man; and a philosophical overview of how various philosophical views regarding the human mind have effected the history of philosophical thought. One of the remarkable things about how the book is written is that it is fully objective. Objectivity consists of maintaining logic, context, and hierarchy. Logic is non-contradictory identification, context is insuring one keeps each bit of knowledge integrated with the rest of one's consciousness, and hierarchy means that some things have to be learned and understood before one can move on to issues related to but following from those previous thoughts. While the book is based on Objectivism and Ayn Rand's philosophy, one need not be familiar with Ayn Rand to be able to read it, since Binswanger gives many examples and demonstrations of the functioning of the human mind that even a beginner reader of philosophy can follow rather easily.

There is one drawback to the book, as far as I can tell; Binswanger does not discuss the role of good art in cognition. “How We Know” is a very comprehensive book on the topic, and it is very difficult to keep all of that information in mind. In the following review, I wrote a review of each chapter shortly after reading it, and I am finding it difficult to condense my review down to a page or two. So, what is needed to help keep a complicated topic in mind is a concretization of that topic, which is provided by good, objective art. One can say, in this context, that “How We Know” is like looking into the inner workings of the mind of an inductive Sherlock Holmes observing how his own mind works, and telling the rest of the world what he discovered.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to the reader who is interested in how we go about knowing the world.

Incredibly smart, precise and thought provoking

I was not familiarized with Dr. Binswanger's theory of epistemology. This book has answered my past doubts on the topics he touches and solved many more thoughts which came along. Many chapters capitalize Dr. Binswanger's genius (my own favorite is the one on Free Will), but the greatest achievement of this book is integration, i.e.: the ability to connect concepts, ideas and principles to each other making a whole inseparable system.
This is a book which any people interested in philosophy -be it a future intellectual, a college student seeking for answers or a philosopher with a PhD- should read.

I ordered this knowing that this was a looseleaf textbook.
It was all great until I actually put it in a binder. I kept ripping the pages out.

THEN, I found out you can spiral bind textbooks (up to 3 inches) over at Office Depot.

I went ahead and called to double check and they did!
I spiral bound 2 textbooks for 7.50 (with Nevada state tax)

Easy to Read. Adequately Detailed For An Intro To World Religions Course. Almost Exactly the Same As Previous Version.

This book explains the religions that it covers well enough. You will learn plenty by reading it. There are some places where the author inputs his own political ideology, which is why it only gets 3 stars. If you can overlook that then it's written well and you will have no trouble understanding it. He's also into name dropping the names of dead psychologists, philosophers and artists. Why? I have no idea. Picasso's opinion of African masks has next to nothing to do with the topic of the religion.
This is a loose leaf book. A note: There's almost no difference between this book and the one that came before it. The main difference was the images. I bought this and compared it to a scan of the previous edition that I found online and I was unable to find any significant differences. That said, I manage to get this pretty cheap when Amazon lowered the price for one day, and I sold it back to the university bookstore for 80% of what I paid for it. Needless to say, I was satisfied with that arrangement. Apparently the bookstores don't always buy these loose leaf books. Amazon did not offer me anything for it. I ended up not even needing it.

False Advertisment: NOT readable on any Android Devise. even though i installed the Amazon Kindle app on my Note 2, which is a tablet format, i CANNOT download this textbook to my devise. it will recognise my PC Kindle app, but not the Note 2/Tablet. so basically the "Compatible Devises" claim is false advertisement. imagine my dissapointment when i realized that i will NOT be able to access the convenience of reading my homework assignments while on the go, & that i'll have to pay much more for even a rental than i could have by being able to read it on Kindle, on my Android Note 2!!! & to think, i thought i would be getting all my textbooks from Amazons eBooks in the future - i guess that's just money they'll never make from me...their loss...

The best Camera Manual

No one uses all the features of a camera. This book gives concise instruction and graphic detail of the complete line of Hasselblad cameras. This is required reading for those new to the Hasselblad and a good reminder the the old timers.

Very dissapointing!

I bought this based upon other reviews. I was grossly dissapointed. This book is a product of the 60s - 70s that's been added to as Hassleblad releases new lines. How can a $60 USD book on Hasselblad contain NO photographs of any Hasselblad equipment? It's all line drawings and the better part of them are relatively primative based on today's standards.

The book does cover most of the body lines and accessories. But I found the narrative to be brief and the accompanying illustrations to be difficult to see - especially for the older gear. The book covers some technique but I didn't buy this book to learn technique. If you've ever used a Magic Lantern camera guide you'll think you've bought an antique with this book. I immediately returned this book.

A great reference book for the Hasselblad system

I am an amateur photographer and a very new owner of a Hasselblad 501CM kit. This was my first purchase of a Hasselblad camera and a dream come true for me. I am now about to finish reading Hasselblad Manual, which I can highly recommend to any present and future Hasselblad users. I think Hasselblad is very easy to use, but it is a camera with a number of special features, which need explanations to beginners like myself in order to draw the camerafs full potentials. The book explains very clearly what a Hasselblad user should know about those special features and what components in the system are most relevant to his/her individual needs. It also contains a lot of practical advice on the day-to-day use of the camera. I presume it is a big decision to pay a Hasselblad price for a camera (it was for me), particularly as there are so many cheaper Japanese alternatives around. For me, it has proved to be the right decision, and reading Wildifs book enhances the joy to use this great camera. The currently available fifth edition has very up-to-date product information. Hasselblad Manual is the reference book I will continue going back to as my photographic skills hopefully grow.

Not what I expected but what I needed.

Husband and I had been struggling with sleep since our baby was 4 months old. We started to sleep train and it was a disaster. Prior to that baby had always bed shared with us (after spending 3-4 months in a co-sleeper) so it was extremely hard trying to put him in a dark room all by himself. It just did not work. Our son cried for days on end and I really regret doing that.
My husband found this book and bought it. I'd also seen it but wasn't impressed with reviews. Anyway, I started reading through it and became greatly encouraged by the authors assessments and advice regarding sleep around my baby's age (10 months at the time). I felt validated in my bed sharing philosophy and also felt like it helped to normalize what we were going through. A lot of websites that want you to buy (literally) into sleep training will pathologize your child's sleep when it isn't pathological! Sure enough, after employing some gentle sleep recommendations from this book, and trusting our mama/papa instincts, we saw results. For us, it was key to cut the night nursing as it was getting out of hand (3-4 times a night at 10 months!). I mean, I wanted to be one of these breastfeeding all night and day mamas but I couldn't function at my new job on the sleep I was getting. Anyway if you need some encouragement and some gentle suggestions then this book is for you. After reading I felt like I knew what to do the whole time and I was now able to listen to those instincts more effectively.

Big on opinions, short on practical tips

I really wanted to like this book and was hopeful that there could be a "no-cry" solution. Reading the other reviews, I'm glad that so many people found the book helpful and were able to encourage their baby to sleep in a gentle way. That being said, this book does not contain anything revolutionary and will not be a "solution" for every baby. It has some helpful tips but the majority of the book is anecdotes and opinions.

Basically the gist of what Pantley advises is 1. Keep track of baby's sleep patterns 2. Put the baby to sleep drowsy but awake 3. Establish bedtime routines 4. Don't nurse the baby every time they wake up. She guarantees her method will work, but i know many parents who tried these things and whose babies still won't sleep. Every baby has a different temperament. The author is very against any method that involves letting baby cry. I assume most parents who are buying this book feel similarly inclined; the issue is that if your baby does not respond to Pantley's method you'll feel even more stressed out because she spends so much of the book opining on the harms of other methods. As a new parent, sleep-deprived and hormonal, reading this book in the middle of the night, I was in tears reading certain passages, because it was so not-helpful and she was so judgmental toward parents who try "CIO" methods.

Quote from book, about CIO methods "If you believe what this “expert” says then you are going down the wrong road with your child. Don’t think for a minute that your tiny baby is not affected by this attitude. This insensitivity to your child’s feelings can be born here and bred into other areas as he grows."

In summary, contains some helpful tips, but be warned that at the end you may be left with a baby who still doesn't sleep, and feeling like trying Ferber or Weissbluth methods make you a terrible person.

DO NOT BUY THE AUDIO VERSION of this book!!!!!!

Horribly written book!!! Don't write a book for sleep deprived parents and spend the first four hours making customers listen to you praise yourself. It put me to sleep while my baby is still wide awake. There are no chapters or guide on the case to help you fast forward to the meat of the book. I have no idea what the secret is to cry free sleep training because I can't force myself to listen to another hour of how great the methods are without knowing WHAT the methods are. SKIP THE AUDIO VERSION if anything.

About the Author

Dr. Leigh, who trained in neurology at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Cornell Medical Center in New York, and the Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, has applied eye movements to study a broad range of disorders affecting the brain, eye, or ear during his career as a clinician-scientist. He has served on review committees of the National Institutes of Health and on the editorial boards of journals Annals of Neurology and Neurology. His collaboration of over 35 years with Dr. Zee has produced many joint publications including five editions of the Neurology of Eye Movements.

Dr. Zee first came to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore in 1965 as a medical student and then trained there in neurology after an internal medicine internship at Cornell Medical Center in New York. Both his research and clinical focus has been on eye movement and vestibular disorders. He has had three sabbatical years at the National Eye Institute in their Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research.
