About the Author

Wil van der Aalst is a full professor at the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science of the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e), The Netherlands, where he chairs the Architecture of Information Systems (AIS) group and serves as the scientific director of the Data Science Center Eindhoven. He also has a part-time appointment in the BPM group of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia. His research and teaching interests include information systems, business process management, process modeling, Petri nets, process mining, and simulation.

Wil has published more than 180 journal papers, 19 books, 425 refereed conference or workshop publications, and 60 book chapters. Many of his papers are highly cited (he has a H-index of more than 123 according to Google Scholar, the highest among all European computer scientists) and his ideas on process support have influenced researchers, software developers, and standardization committees worldwide.

Bar, raised! Surely a Classic

First, given his long history of publications and credibility in this area, when Roger Ulrich writes the foreword to a book, there is a pretty good chance that the book itself will be extraordinary. And Therapeutic Landscapes is extraordinary.

There is one significant detail missing from the book description above (i.e. the material lifted from the back cover) - I was very surprised to find about 300 beautiful photographs and illustrated designs (all with the exception of one or two are in full color) perfectly nestled and numerically captioned to accompany the written text. The photographs are of such high quality, and each is appropriate to the educational components being described in each chapter. There is an average of about 1 beautiful image per page, and in a book about the therapeutic value of nature and design with nature in mind, this visual is so important - the book comes alive and the material is more relevant.

The written content itself is a precise match with its description - highly researched! It was obvious before even finishing the introduction that this project involved gathering and synthesizing a tremendous amount of cutting-edge studies (as well as historical documents) from a wide variety of medico-scientific and design publications. There are many texts that have attempted the same; however Therapeutic Landscapes excels because of the way in which the information is presented -

1. Just the right amount of historical background to provide a frame of reference
2. Makes the scientific case for evidence-based design with just the right amount of depth without being too technical
3. Explores the general and specific considerations and guidelines for design
4. Each chapter is referenced - how valuable!
5. International settings are discussed in detail
6. Beyond the photographs, case studies bring the text to "real world" application

The most authoritative guide out there

Being in the outdoors and the action of gardening itself can be incredibly healing to people who are recuperating from surgery or a major illness, and for their caregivers. When I was a teenager, I had multiple rounds of lung surgery, and gardening on my front porch was one of the first things that made me feel human again after being in the hospital almost constantly for over a month. I think this experience was pivotal in my decision to become a landscaper a few years later.

So it was with great interest that I picked up this book on therapeutic landscaping. The publisher and the price point should make it obvious that this isn't a book for casual readers but more a text to be used in landscape design classes, for healthcare professionals, or for anyone who may be designing an outdoor space for people to rest and recover in. That said, the text is simple and clearly laid out and you don't need any kind of architectural or professional background to derive great benefit from the practical tips, clear photos, and steady guidance within.

Though I have picked up multiple books on how to design gardens for people with disabilities, how to select tools and plants, and what to consider when creating healing gardens, this book is far and away the most authoritative and clear compendium of every consideration you will need to create a therapeutic landscape in pretty much any setting. The book covers issues of liability, signage, best practices for pathways and seating and more. In addition, there are numerous statistics in many areas were scientific research is presented that share the specific benefits of different kinds of therapeutic landscapes, which is helpful if you'd like to create a therapeutic landscape but need to win over a boss, board or committee in order to get funding or the go-ahead.

There is nothing unprofessional about this book. Though in certain circles things like art therapy, garden therapy, and therapy with pets are seen as a little soft or woo-woo, the landscapes shown as examples, the advice given, and the scientific research backing the importance of landscapes in hospital and other settings makes it impossible to dismiss these types of landscapes as being unworthy of the funding or the energy to create.

Overall, if you are in the landscape design field and see yourself designing public or commercial spaces or even just residential spaces for people who may be differently abled in some way, this is a vitally important book for you to have for your reference library and to read. Not only will you enjoy the process of learning more about the topic, but the information is top-notch and easy to find when you are embarking on relevant projects.

A comprehensive review of therapeutic landscapes that explains how relevant research results can be factored into garden designs to create successful healing environments in a variety of healthcare settings. The authors describe and evaluate several existing healthcare gardens and provide practical analysis of what works and what doesn't. A must-read for anyone designing therapeutic gardens. Al Farabi: A Reintroduction for Our Times

In An Islamic Philosophy of Virtuous Religions, Joshua Parens seeks to introduce the political philosophy of Al Farabi, a tenth century Islamic philosopher, to the twenty-first century in which revolutionary Iran and Islamofascist movements aspire to a universal caliphate through jihad. As a Muslim, Al Farabi, who lived in a time of similar aspiration, wrote between the lines in an attempt to moderate these aspirations and promote religious tolerance. It is this type of writing which may assist an internal Islamic Reformation today. Joshua Paren's book is a book for both Muslims and non-Muslims today who struggle with these theological-political problems.

In this regard, this book's particular focus differs generally from the writings of Leo Strauss and Muhsin Mahdi on Al Farabi, the latter being Joshua Paren's teacher. Leo Strauss' writings are linked to his studies of Maimonides; whereas, Muhsin Mahdi's importance is that he broadened as well as deepened Strauss' insight/rediscovery through a critical recovery of Al Farabi's corpus and his scholarship culminating in his 2001 book Alfarabi and the Foundation of Islamic Political Philosophy which predates 9/11. Though Joshua Parens acknowledges his debt to his teacher in both in the Acknowledgements and throughout this book, it is not a derivative work but stands on its own.

The primary focus of Joshua Paren's study is The Attainment of Happiness, not the Principles of the Opinions of the Inhabitants of the Virtuous City as set forth in the one star review. (The Attainment of Happiness is the first part of Al Farabi's Philosophy of Plato and Aristotle.) Through Joshua Paren's close reading of The Attainment of Happiness accompanied with his deep familiarity of Al Farabi's other writings, he shows how Al Farabi seeks to moderate the ambitious through both (1) a cautionary tale and (2) a showing of the limits of reason. In a sense, it is Al Farabi's reenactment of Plato's Republic where Glaucon is replaced by "the talented and dashing young men the city is most likely to take advantage of and corrupt".

Although Joshua Parens considers his work by its title an introduction to Al Farabi, it is neither simple nor easy. One of its great strength is through his close reading of texts wherein he shows one how to read Plato and Aristotle, how Al Farabi read Plato and Aristotle and how we should read Al Farabi. It is no small task. While reading this book, one needs at one's elbow minimally Muhsin Mahdi's translation of Alfarabi: The Political Writings, The Philosophy of Plato and Aristotle in order to follow the argument. Joshua Parens considers this work as a felicitous translation though it is clear that he is familiar with Arabic since at crucial points he differs with his teacher's translation.

Joshua Parens is a much needed guide through Al Farabi's writings especially in our times when reason is under attack and all forms of unreason are on the rise.

Totally derivative

The subject (Alfarabi's Platonic critique of Islamic doctrine) is interesting, but the book itself is misleadingly presented and unoriginal. An introduction to Farabi this is most certainly not. If you read it without much familiarity with his work, you'll be hopelessly confused. Parens is an indirect writer who focuses on only one of Farabi's works (The Attainment of Happiness) and jumps right into the argument without orienting the reader effectively to the relevant text. Deceptive marketing aside, this book is really just a monograph trying to bolster the esoteric interpretation of Plato and Farabi pioneered by Leo Strauss, whose own work on Farabi (see, as a starting point, "Farabi's Plato") you can find for free online. I advise you do so, rather than spending $15 on this.

Here are the major parts of Parens' argument. First, he argues that Plato's Republic is a cautionary tale rather than a prescription. This is a compelling argument, but it's not original at all. Second, Parens argues that Farabi was deeply versed in the Republic, and saw his own work on ideal states as basically extending Plato's own goals to the Islamic context (this was Strauss' original insight). Third, he picks two areas where he thinks Farabi is particularly critical of contemporary Islamic doctrine (jihad as offensive war and the limits of human knowledge), and parses them in exhaustive detail. This is the only part of his work that's original, and it can be summed up as follows: those things that Strauss says Farabi does? He does them in these sections.

Finally, he argues that Farabi envisioned a multiplicity of virtuous religions, each developing from a particular cultural context, and that Islam--like the belief system Plato proposes in the Republic--isn't well suited to governing a heterogeneous state. Thus, like Plato's city in the Republic, Farabi's virtuous Islamic realm is intended to be neither possible nor desirable. This is also piggybacking on Strauss.

There you have it all. Parens doesn't seem to read Arabic or add any particular expertise in Islamic philosophy (he relies almost entirely on Muhsin Mahdi's interpretive work, himself a disciple of Strauss) to build off the foundation Strauss established. To anyone familiar with Strauss and Mahdi, the result reads like a first-year graduate student's work, with Parens merely serving as a compiler for arguments other people have already made in much more elegant prose. It's about as close as you can come to plagiarism without actually crossing that line. While I think the ideas in question are very serious and probably right, Strauss and Mahdi do a better job of expounding them, and are far more accessible to those unfamiliar with Farabi.

Andrew Loomis was an American illustrator, author and art instructor whose commercial work was featured in advertising and various magazines. Loomis is best known for a series of instructional art books that have influenced popular artists long after his death and has had numerous titles published by Titan Books including Creative Illustration, Drawing the Head and Hands, Figure Drawing, Fun with a Pencil, and Successful Drawing.

It still feels unfinished

[[VIDEOID:11ad64da1c05f4679ae31444c8d39fbf]]Publisher Titan Books did a huge favour for the art community with the reprints of Andrew Loomis books. Apparently, there was an unfinished Loomis that never made it to publication. Well, this is that book.

I'd Love to Draw is a drawing book targeted at the absolute beginners. Loomis' text is as usual very encouraging but some of the text are written in cursive letters which I find difficult to read. Compared to other Loomis books, the instructions here are made simpler, to the extent that I felt they are lacking in depth.

The book covers drawing of basic objects (using geometry), perspective, lighting, drawing the head and figure. The structure is fine but in many cases there could be more explanation included to help beginners. Basic drawing tips are present, but the book had much more potential. A good portion of what's taught here is quite similar to the content in Fun With a Pencil.

The sketches and main text for the book were already completed by Loomis, just that the captions were missing. So comic book artist Alex Ross was enlisted to help finish the book. If you've read Alex Ross' artbooks, you'll find out that he cites Loomis as one of his main influences.

For the last two chapters on drawing the head and figures, Loomis provided only the introduction while Alex Ross had to give captions to all the drawings and he did quite a good job filling in the blanks, providing insight and tips.

Overall, the book still feels unfinished to me. Perhaps it's because of the very sketchy drawings, or the pencils lines that are supposed to be erased but are not, but mostly because there could be more instructions provided.

If you're a beginner, I would recommend getting the other Loomis books which are more detailed, more satisfying to learn from, and represent better value for the money spent.

Think About What This Book is Actually For...

Sure, there's some images in this book that we've seen before. Maybe the information isn't totally fresh if you've read his other books cover to cover. But you have to stop and realize what the point of this book was going to be and what it means today. This particular book serves two purposes: It was originally intended to be a title for people who have never drawn before, sporting an even more fundamental approach than "Fun With a Pencil;" and for the people who already know what's up, it gives us a rare insight into Loomis's workflow, providing us with handwritten manuscripts and rough sketches that have a completely different look and feel than his more polished images that we see in his other books. Of course, an Andrew Loomis book would be nothing without his warm and to-the-point commentary, which is surprisingly in-depth for a "beginner's" how-to book. You can tell this was a labor of love and I think it turned out great, considering the material they had to work from.

Probably not the best introduction to Andrew Loomis

Since I have the other five Loomis re-issues, I didn't blink at picking "I'd Love to Draw" up, but it's definitely a different animal than the other books. So first off, if you're looking for actual instruction, pick up "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" and "Creative Illustration" first. They're both tremendous assets for artists who want to learn how to draw figures (and basic perspective, as well).

"I'd Love to Draw" is actually an unfinished proposal for an unpublished book by Loomis, who wanted to make a book for super-beginners, the sort of people who are intimidated by the very notion of drawing in the first place. So instead of the amazing, more finished drawings in Loomis' other books, the drawings are mostly sketches that would have been re-done in a more time-intensive fashion, had the book been picked up for publication. To help things out, pretty famous cartoonist Alex Ross (of "Marvels" fame) has added a foreward and commentary throughout the book, to help clarify what it is that you're looking at.

So this is an interesting book, but you should probably only get it if you're deep into Loomis and NEED to see more work by him (which is the opposite of the intent of the book in the first place), otherwise you might be wondering what all the fuss about Loomis is. As far as it being good for beginners, perhaps, but there are other how-to books (including the aforementioned Loomis volumes) that you'd probably get more mileage out of.

About the Author
Plant student Dale Pendell established himself as one of the foremost popular exponents of shamanic ethnobotany with his unprecedented Pharmako trilogy. A noted poet, he was the founding editor of the avant-garde magazine Kuksu and a co-founder of the Primitive Arts Institute and has led workshops on ethnobotany and ethnopoetics for the Naropa Institute and the Omega Institute. Pendell was part of the Oracular Madness theme camp at Burning Man for a number of years (his book Inspired Madness: The Gifts of Burning Man was published by Frog Books in 2006). Also an experienced computer scientist, he lives in California's Sierra foothills.

A must have for anybody interested in the science and lore of psychoactive substances.

The third installment of the Pharmako- series, Phamako/Gnosis addresses the more psychedelic and hallucinogenic plants and chemicals. Pendell does this with the skill that we would expect after the previous two books. Well written, and easy to read, packed with enough information for the advanced studier, and simple enough for the beginner.
For anybody with an interest in the origins, history, use, science, and lore of these "poisons," this is a book that belongs on your shelf.

Speaking in Plain English

This book is quite an adventure and a wonderful book for those who already have some knowledge of plants and their Latin names, uses and history. I highly recommend it to the intermediate student. A beginner may have a little trouble following but it is a well written text with a highly detailed section on each plant, genus, plant uses in history and in modern day times, as well as the occasional bit of trivia. In some places, it's almost as if the author has had a personal relationship with the spirit of each plant.

It's been left to others to tell it for him. In making the decision to tell my own story, it means that I've become one of those who can give insight to who Big really was. But I can only speak on what he meant to me.

Yet I also want people to understand that although he was a large part of my life, my story doesn't actually begin or end with Big's death. My journey has been complicated on many levels. And since I am always linked to Big, there are a lot of misconceptions about who I really am.

I hope that in reading my words, there is inspiration to be found. Perhaps you can duplicate my success or achieve where I have failed. Maybe you can skip over the mistakes I've made. Use my life as an example-of what to do and in some cases, what not to do.

This story confirms that with FAITH in God and hardwork, anything is possible!

I thoroughly enjoyed Fatih's journey. This was a very easy read that covered Faith's life from a small girl with stars in her eyes to a young woman, widow, and mother. I was really surprised at how forthcoming Faith wass in revealing her many sexual dalliances and abortions. She held nothing back, including the several beatdowns she dished out to the women who were having affairs with her husband,Biggie Smalls, including Lil Kim. She was definitley not a shrinking violet when it came time to whip some you know what. But admittedly, she was not able to bring the same bravado to the table when dealing with record executives, included Sean Combs. Eventually Faith is able to stand up for herself. She truly went through a great deal, some at her own hand and other incidents due to the actions of others. I admire how she joined forces with Biggie's mom after his death to settle his estate and through it all she strived to keep her family together. The book had me looking up various songs on Youtube that she had recorded, but that I wasn't familiar with. There was one song made famous by the group Rose Royce--"Love Don't Live Here Anymore" that Faith didn't want to record, but at the urging of Sean Combs, she did record it with Mary J. Blige. Subsequently, Mary asked for her vocals to be removed, because of a disagreemenw with Sean Combs. The verision I listened to on Youtube does not have Mary's voice. Overall, this was an engaging read and a nice musical trip down memory lane.

Keep the Faith: A Memoir

I enjoyed the book very much. It's amazing that after everything that Faith went through, she became the most successful artist in the industry. She did an excellent job describing the in-depth relationship she had with the late Notorious B.I.G. She learned how love can be more complicated when you fall madly in love with someone, but your love is messing around with other people behind your back. In my opinion, she should of left him instead of having many affairs,but I can't blame her for doing that considering she needed love and attention in a marriage when Biggie wasn't doing right in the relationship. Overall, the book was outstanding to read and after losing Big, she moved forward in her life along with her new man in her life along with their four children. She has definitely continue keep the Faith.

The Red Bone Saga Continues

I will say that I truthfully enjoyed this book. I would have probably never read it had it not been chosen by my book club...but I am truly glad that someone chose it, her story is inspirational. It gives you a picture of someone who probably didn't have the best odds stacked against her in succeeding in life, and she surpassed even her own expectations. All Faith wanted to do was sing. She didn't care in which avenue her voice took her as long as she was able to sing. I enjoyed reading about her hustle and how she worked with so many artists during the time she was trying to make a name for herself.

On another note I think as a person you either like Faith Evans or you don't. She seemed to me to be kind of cocky and full over herself, I found myself saying, "This Chick really thinks she is like that" I would have liked to see a more humble person. When you see Faith in interviews and on T.V. you don't get the image that she is full of herself.

Faith left out a lot, I am a writer myself My Eyes Are Green is my debut novel which is a work of fiction. There is no way that I would be able to put myself out there and let the world know every little detail. There are things that I am embarrassed about, that I would feel uncomfortable discussing, (which is why I won't be doing a memoir anytime soon) and I am sure Faith felt the same way.

I think Faith knows what the beef between her and Mary is and just didn't want to speak about it. I also feel like the relationship between BIG and her wasn't REAL! I also hated the fact that she painted lil Kim out to be less of a women than her, which to me wasn't fair or accurate. What I get when I read "between the lines" is that BIG may have preferred Kim because he kept going back to her and that is what pissed Faith off. She made such a big deal about BIG marrying her like that was a sign that she was better than Kim and Tiffany aka Charlie Baltimore. I do not think of it as better. I look at it that she just got lucky and caught a break.

All in all, the book was a page turner. Before I read the book I loved Faith and even went to a concert when she was in DC and thoroughly enjoy it. I wished she was more truer with her feelings in her memoir, but I can honestly say it would be hard for me to write one so I have to give her props. JOB WELL DONE ON THE FIRST BOOK!

Funny moments built on a shaky premise

If you liked Tropper's past novels (as I do) then you'll find this most recent offering enjoyable for the same reasons: quirky characters, moments of real insight, twisty plot lines and deftly constructed emotional set pieces. The dialogue sparkles, even as all the characters draw you to their own distinct world views.

In short, here's another romantic comedy that's missing only the production notes and studio backing. Get me Julia Roberts and Albert Brooks on the phone! But I'm really alright with that. A novel that reads like a movie is usually a sign of a tightly written, dialogue-rich, marvelously descriptive work. It's also indicative of a great beach book.

Light weight? Maybe. But to my mind it's really quite OK to be a writer of fiction who tells an interesting tale really well. My only problem this time out is I never buy the central premise: that the main character is diagnosed with a condition that will kill him if he doesn't get surgery and he decides not to have the surgery. I just don't believe him. He tries to convince the reader and every other character in the book that he's serious. None of us are buying it.

Does he live or die? Buy the book and find out. In the end, I find myself enjoying the journey and caring little for the destination.

How do you go on living if you don't like your life anymore?

I don't know Jonathan Tropper, or what his life has been like, but he sure does have the ability to provide pitch-perfect perspective into young (and not-so-young) men struggling with what they've made of their lives. His This is Where I Leave You was my favorite book of 2009, and I've enjoyed a number of his earlier books as well, because I love how he gives poignantly funny voice to these somewhat dysfunctional men as they try to get a handle on their past, present, and future.

In his newest book, One Last Thing Before I Go, Drew Silver is a 40-something musician who briefly had a taste of fame as the drummer of a one-hit-wonder band years before. What he has become good at is making a shambles of things--his ex-wife is getting remarried, and his college-bound daughter, with whom he shares a sporadic relationship, has just revealed she's pregnant. To top it off, he drinks too much, has gained weight, and lives in the Versailles, an apartment building mostly populated with divorced men like him. He finds it's easier to do nothing than risk disappointing others, or himself.

When he discovers he needs a life-saving operation to repair a tear in his aorta, he decides that rather than spend more time in the sad state his life has become, he'll refuse to have the operation. That decision, of course, doesn't sit well with his family or friends, and neither does his newly found habit of actually speaking his thoughts out loud, which leads to numerous awkward, painful, and emotional situations. What Silver wants more than anything is to be a better man, be a better father, and to fall in love, but whether he can accomplish any of those before dying--or being abandoned by those he loves--is anyone's guess.

One of Jonathan Tropper's strengths as a writer is his skill in creating characters that you don't necessarily admire but can't help but like. His voice is also tremendous--he's definitely comfortable throwing in humor to temper the pathos and emotional situations, but it never feels forced or false. And if this book isn't as funny as some of his earlier ones, that's more than fine. Silver's journey of self-discovery (and some self-loathing) takes you on an enjoyable and engrossing ride, one that makes you laugh, makes you smile, and maybe even tears you up just a little.

Tropper is definitely one of those authors you should get to know, unless the whole man-in-early-midlife-crisis mode thing doesn't work for you. And even then, don't be deterred.

Did not love this one.

Well. I loved This Is Where I Leave You. This one, not so much.

First, it was not nearly as funny. Second, the MC - inexplicably called Silver - was just not the lovable loser he was made out to be. And, the reader is beaten over the head with the lovable loser concept. Perhaps in an attempt to make it be true.

Silver's daughter is pregnant, his ex-wife is getting married, and he discovers that he needs surgery, soon, or else he will die. So he decides, eh, I'm never going to be anything more than a lovable loser, guess I'll just go ahead and die. Never mind that his wonderful parents are totally distraught, never mind that his daughter appears to want him in her life, never mind any of it, the story must go on and the story is that Silver would just prefer to die. He knows what changes he'd need to make to have the life he'd like to have, I guess he just doesn't have the energy to make them. Ugh.

The worst of it for me, though, was the quirky movie scene-ness of most of the book. I say, write a book, and if you're lucky enough that it's made into a movie, they can add the stopping-dead-on-the-highway-on-ramp scene, or the sing-your-one-hit-wonder-song-out-of-nowhere-at-some-kid's-bar-mitzvah scene later. Almost all of the scenes in the book felt like they were written to entice a movie producer. Or many of them. Just annoying. Did not love this book. At all.

PurposeThe purpose of this book is to provide data analysts, strategists and data administrators with a definitive guide to Entity Relationship Modelling. At the same time, I was very keen that the book should be well-thumbed by regular use, as opposed to sitting on someone's shelf.

I believe that a sound grasp of entity relationship modelling can provide a firm architectural framework for understanding a business and creating flexible systems for the future. There are, however, many things that need to be considered over a period of time to take advantage of these basic techniques.

Not least of these considerations is understanding the meaning of words as applied by our users and separately within the Information Systems department. It is certainly my experience that many system developments fail because of the use of jargon and protectionism within the ivory tower of the Information Systems department, coupled with the bewildering explosion of technology. In this book I am implicitly recommending that analysts must discard their egos, and instead recognize that there is strength in their Human fallibility. In practical terms it means seeking out the most thorough and accurate understanding of the business, and then exposing that to your users and peers so they can help you gain even more accuracy. I have seen this 'egoless' team approach not only enable teams to build far more appropriate systems but act as a catalyst, knitting together users, system development staff and even accountants.

How to Use This BookI hope this book will be used by novice and expert alike. It has, therefore, been designed to provide easy-reading, tutorial-like chapters and definitive reference chapters and appendices. Later chapters contain more complex examples and techniques to be used once you have mastered the basic techniques. A single example runs through the book, based on a hypothetical airline. However, other examples and common problems are provided to help minimize your learning curve.

The appendices are designed to cover other useful concepts, further detail quality checks, first-cut database design and data administration. All the important terms in the book are covered by the glossary and, finally, an extensive index and the contents list are there to provide alternative entry points to the information in the book.

This book should provide 'hot-line' support to your entity relationship modelling when that really key problem requires urgent resolution.

The ONLY database design book you need (w/one exception)

I don't know why there are not more reviews on this book. I read this book when I first started my 12-year career in the database industry. And to tell you the truth, there is only one other book I have ever needed (regarding database design) -- "The Data Warehouse Toolkit" (Kimball) -- only because Data Warehouse design is much different than the design theories in this book.
This book teaches you ways to design any database, and model any business -- what questions to ask users, what an entity really is, how you define it, how to tell a difference between an entity and an attribute, how to model relationships between entities, how to model "types" in a database. If you an learn the principles in this book, you will quickly become an expert in database design.
Buy this book -- you will not need another. And if you are building a data warehouse, buy this book first, so you understand the difference between OLTP design and data warehouse design.

Case * Methods: Task and Deliverables

I work in the Information Technology Section for the Department of Natural Resources. This review is for the book Case* Method: Tasks and Deliverables by Richard Barker ISBN 0-201-41697-2.
I have been using Richards book on Case Methodology for years as a guideline for project management and planning. There has been many methodologies introduce to the department through out the years, but we keep coming back to the concepts and tactics outlined in this book to help keep things organized and on track. I have found his concepts have proven themselves through time as a good template to follow. I am looking forward to reviewing your books Case*Method: Entity Relationship Modelling as well as Storage Area Networking Essentials.
Keep up the good work that has a timeless application and relevance.

Still packs the most punch in as few words as necessary

This was also my first book in Data Modelling and though its been almost 10 years ago since I picked up my copy, I still have not seen many better on the shelves since in its category: intro to data modeling via ER diagraming (IE notation)
Though I no longer need to refer to this book any longer, it was certainly the first and best of the first books read in the subject and it speedily had me on my way to more advanced topics and eventually becoming an expert ER modeller.
I was so impressed by the book I eventually joined Oracle.. alas Barker had moved on but his case*method books haven't lost a step in so long a time..
