Excellent buy for the Graduate or Experienced HVAC Engineer
By D. D. Olalehè
The best overall coverage of HVAC principles in one volume. I've personally used it at University and I'm currently making great use of it now in the industry.

Addresses everything HVAC - The History, Psychrometrics, Duct and Piping Design, Health and Comfort Criteria, Load Calculations, Air Distribution and much more. Thorough explanations and end-of-chapter questions expose the reader to real-life applications.

Deatiled enough for the degree seeking student, yet concise enough to be used as a reference manual for a seasoned professional.

Splendid!

I read this book to my child and it's excellent! Actually i know it's only for children but i enjoyed reading it too! It was absolutely lovely! i really recommend this book to others. It was recommended to me by my good friend, Liz. She is also lovely. But this book shows children the aspects of homes and sharing and should not be selfish. This is important for everyone to learn, and the sooner the better. So read this book!

I would like to personally write a letter or send an email to Fred Pyrczak because he made learning statistics SUPER easy. I'm in a Master's degree program and I had to take a statistics exam to "test out" of taking the course since it had been three years since I took it in my undergrad. I was so nervous I wouldn't pass the exam and that I would have to push back my entire program just to fit in the stats course but I didn't thanks to this author!!! I tested out on my exam on my first try! He is so amazing. I mean, he gives you TONS of real life examples. There's no way you can not apply this to things going on in the world around you. TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLLY GET THIS BOOK IF YOU NEED TO LEARN STATS!

I got this book for a class and it has served its purpose. The information is very basic and doesn't cover statistics necessary for most disciplines. If you are looking for an easy to understand statistics text book, this is it.

A Man of Honor: The Autobiography of Joseph Bonanno, by Joseph Bonanno

"Friendships, connections, family ties, trust, loyalty, obedience-this was the 'glue' that held us together."

These were the principles that the greatest Mafia "Boss if Bosses," Joseph Bonnano, lived by. Born in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily, Bonnano found his future amid the whiskey-running, riotous streets of Prohibition America in 1924, when he illegally entered the United States to pursue his dreams. By the age of only twenty-six, Bonnano became a Don. He would eventually take over the New York underworld, igniting the "Castellammarese War," one of the bloodiest Family battles ever to hit New York City...

Now, in this candid and stunning memoir, Joe Bonanno-likely a model for Don Corleone in the blockbuster movie The Godfather-takes readers inside the world of the real Mafia. He reveals the inner workings of New York's Five Families-Bonanno, Gambino, Profaci, Lucchese, and Genovese-and uncovers how the Mafia not only dominated local businesses, but also influenced national politics. A fascinating glimpse into the world of crime, A Man of Honor is an unforgettable account of one of the most powerful crime figures in America's history.

I'm so very glad he wrote this book
By Jack Ocean
I'm so very glad he wrote this book. I'm not Italian, but descended from recent Irish Catholic immigrants from NY on my mom's side and trace my father's roots to the Virginia colonies. The difference between the Northern immigrant side and American side of things existed in my own house, so I recognize a few things. I know how immigrants seem to see things differently than the standard culture. My grandma was almost Nun-like in her Catholicism, but her opinions on the IRA or the wars in Ireland against the North would label her as a supporter of terror. It's crazy.....Anyway,

It seems to me the story of the "mafia" is in fact the story of immigration and assimilation of Sicilian culture into America. I actually find it relieving to know it started out as self preservation they learned from hardships in their homeland. It sucks how we still find it so easy to label some of these guys like Bonnano as evil. Immigrant life was amazingly hard and grouping together in clans like they did at home was probably the smartest thing any of them could do because of prejudice and bigotry of the times towards immigrants. It seems to me that Bonanno's entire Autobiography is a treatise of survival in the midst of certain doom in the New world for the immigrants of the time. Rather than despair, they worked this whole mafia thing out from their homeland. But as survival morphed into greed and blood lust it is apparent at least some of these Sicilian guys were aware of becoming victim to their series of catch 22's..........and how war (a culture of violence) can cause your discretion to be altered in ways that deteriorate into something completely obscene like what organized crime truly is. What these early immigrants suffered is a travesty upon our entire country. It will continue to be a true loss so long as the entire experience is bastardized into glorifying violence and "Goodfella", "Soprano", type thinking from which young descendants of immigrants are getting swept up in even today. Bonanno's book is like getting to read the intelligent side of the story from the group who lost. If you read between the lines here there's a lot to learn about immigration and what prejudice and hatred get you........from all angles

Interesting Reading
By Pachyderm
Not all that honest of a book, I suppose he might have been delusional enough to believe his own story when it was written. He completely paints himself as a great guy who donated tons of cash to the Church and other various causes. Let there be no foolishness here, he was a really bad guy.

However, his excellent history of the early days of The Mob are interesting and (AFAIK) accurate. Rudy Giuliani used this book to help roll up The Mob as it was then. Bonanno practically gave him everything he needed to see who did what and when. This book and the testimony of Special Agent Joseph D. Pistone (who worked for the Bonanno Family as Donnie Brasco) did a real number on the five families of New York as well as the families in other cities.

It is an engaging and interesting read, even though at the end his BS really becomes apparent. The earlier parts ring a lot more true, with all the violence and crime edited out. The later stuff seems a lot more contrived, more CYA than anything resembling the truth.

I enjoyed reading this autobiography quite a bit, but had to keep my BS Meter on at full power for the last parts... ;-)

A solid, alebeit sometimes slow, read!
By R.L. Jenkins
I'm not going to get into a big long thing here. Two things you should know: Joe Bonanno is a liar and a coward. Read the book, it doesn't take long to figure this out. And two, this might be the closest and therefore most disturbing look into the psyche of a mafioso in publication right now. When I say disturbing, I don't mean gory or violent. For a "mafia" book, there is very little of that to be found which is obviously intentional. What I find most disturbing is that, even without violence or gore, it doesn't take long for you to hate Joe Bonanno as you see just how little honor this man possesses. The way he is able to rationalize his cowardice, the way Bonanno is able to make his lack of a spine or integrity seem like a principled set of values is nothing short of abhorrent. That's what makes this such a fascinating read. We know what happened. The truth of the historical and legal record bears all of this out and yet you get a complete retelling of these events with an innocent Joe Bonanno leading the charge as the man on the white horse out to save eroding values from the lack of moral direction found in the new world. It was hard to read to be honest at times because you just feel gross taking in this man's, this murderer's lies and distortions of truth. It's worth the read if for nothing else that it gives some pretty clear insight into the deluded and self-centered mind of a killer who believes himself to be the model of honor. For anyone who may have grown up fantasizing about being a made man, this is the book that will leave you feeling peevish for the desire. And while there are a number of good things about this book, the same cannot be said for the man that is its subject.

From Publishers Weekly
Best remembered for his writings on Japan, where he settled in 1890, Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) is too often pigeonholed as a decadent aesthete or a stylist of overripe prose. Interweaving generous selections from Hearn's own letters, articles, essays, confessions and stories in this moving, superlative biography, Cott ( The Search for Omm Sety ) gives us all sides of the man--the muckraking Cincinnati, Ohio, journalist of Zola-esque realism; the ethnographer of tropical Martinique, Creole folkways in New Orleans and Japanese Buddhism; the mordant humorist; and the unabashed sensualist. The Greek-born, half-Irish bohemian also exposed America's hypocrisies concerning sex and race, prejudices which he experienced firsthand in his short-lived first marriage to a mulatto woman in Ohio. Paradoxically, in coercive, traditional Japan, where he married a submissive young Japanese woman, freewheeling individualist Hearn found his "land of dreams" and felt the spirit of ancient Greece flickering in sacred shrines and groves. [From the Introduction.]

In allowing this voice to manifest itself, I hoped to present the story of a Greek-Anglo-Irish child abandoned by his parents when he was five years old; who was partly blinded when he was sixteen during a schoolboys' game; who felt for most of his life like a social misfit; who, as an adolescent, dared to reject completely his Catholic upbringing because of his ardent belief in the ancient Greek gods; who, at various times of his life, found himself destitute, homeless, and sleeping on the streets and alleyways of London, Cincinnati, and New Orleans; who broke social taboos and antimiscegenation laws with his sexual predilection for mulatto and black women; and who gradually developed into a remarkable, disciplined, mostly self-taught bohemian man of letters--a model for more recent bohemian writers such as Jaime de Angulo, Gary Snyder, and Henry Miller, the last declaring: "My passion for Japan began with Lafcadio Hearn."

In dealing with such a life, about which most casual readers of Hearn knew little or nothing, I also hoped to avoid the often racist, prudish, and provincial comments--as well as the all-embracing reductionist psychologizing (Oedipus complex, inferiority complex, puer complex) or etiological theorizing (Hearn's genius/weakness as a function of his myopia)--that pervade many of the previous biographies about a writer whom many critics, at one time or another, have spoken of as "a sensual Romantic," "a decadent aesthete," "a morbid genius," "a rootless cosmopolite," "a bohemian misfit," "a frightened escapist," "a wandering dreamer."

To be a wanderer, the novelist Marguerite Yourcenar once remarked, "requires an ability to take pleasure in the outer spectacle of things combined with a definite willingness to go beyond that spectacle in order to discover the often hidden realities underneath. Every traveler is Ulysses and ought to be Proteus as well."

Disappointing as a biography, better as a reader
By Kay A. Douglas
I had expected Wandering Ghost to be a standard biography, but the number of long passages taken from Hearn's writings made me wonder what the author's intent was. At least half (or more) of the book is comprised of these lengthy passages from Hearn's newspaper work and other writings.

At times these quotes serve to move the book forward, but more often than not they bog it down, as in the inclusion of an entire newspaper story about a sensational murder -- some 13 pages that, while they served as a good illustration of Hearn's more florid prose style, served very little purpose biographically. The quoted passages are so numerous and at times so extraneous that it is frustrating to read this book as a biography. It's especially irksome when a five- or six-page lengthy quote is used when a one- or two-paragraph one would have easily sufficed.

Perhaps the problem is that I didn't pay sufficient attention to the publisher's description of Wandering Ghost as containing "generous selections" from Hearn's work, but even that did not prepare me for the amount of quoted material. Given the richness of the subject and wealth of material that Hearn left behind, it seems a shame that a more lucid biographical account of his life was not attempted.

Home is where the heart is
By Zack Davisson
I wasn't prepared for what an excellent book this was. I have long been a fan of Lafcadio Hearn's Japan-themed books, and was interested in learning more about him and about what brought him to the country so long ago. But I figured the rest of his story would hold little interest for me.

Jonathon Cott has proven me wrong. "Wandering Ghost: The Odyssey of Lafcadio Hearn" shows a truly fascinating character, one who was eternally searching for somewhere to belong, one who's tastes and fashions were completely out of synch with the time he lived in, one who was chasing a dream so distant that he could only find it in the most remarkable of places, only to hold it for awhile and watch it slowly slip away.

Born of a Greek mother and an Irish father, Hearn was never accepted as a child. A half-breed, he was shunted from relative to relative until finally shipped off to the US to make his own way. There, his unique racial status allowed him access to both the white cities and the black ghettos, and his skills as a writer got him a job translating the forbidden culture for the newspapers. An acclaimed journalist, he accrued some degree of success until his then-illegal marriage to a black woman saw him fired, disgraced, and exiled to New Orleans. His mania for writing, his passion for "exotic" women, and his desire to go to the hidden corners of society to record and experience native folklore and traditions soon made him a pariah, and he was exiled again. After trying several tropical islands, hidden paradises and various adventures, an opportunity opened up for him to journey to the mysterious and unknown Japan. There he found acceptance, family, and his own peace at last.

What is truly remarkable about "Wandering Ghost" is that it is an auto-biography as much as a biography. It is filled with Hearn's writings; newspaper articles, personal letters, sketches on interesting characters and places, thoughts and reflections, a glimpse inside his head. Cott originally began with the idea of publishing some of Hearn's non-Japan related writing, but was overcome by the sheer bulk of it all and decided to sift through them and shape them into Hearn's story. Seeing all of this, I gained much more respect for Hearn as a writer as opposed to a mere chance observer of the fading Japanese culture.

Good Introduction to Hearn
By Kevin M. Derby
I'm not exactly sure what to make of "Wandering Ghost" by Jonathan Cott. The book is torn between being a creative biography and an anthology of Hearn's writings. Either way, it serves a good introduction to Hearn. But there are problems. Hearn lived a fascinating life-time in Greece, Ireland, France, England, Cincinnati, New Orleans, the islands, then off to Japan. Sometimes Cott is content to leave the narrative for pages at a time for a quite from Hearn. Parts of Hearn's life pass by the blink of an eye. While Hearn aficionados will enjoy the book, they will also be frustrated, especially scholars on the trail of footnotes and sources. Drawing from letters and essays, this work may be best appreciated as an introduction to Hearn and will inspire new interest and appreciation for this haunting writer who linked East and West and had insights into many worlds. Hearn was also close to a diverse group of people (a former slave was his common life wife for example and he was married to a Japanese woman). While I appreciate the flowing narrative, I would have enjoyed a bit more insight and analysis into Hearn's life and work. Despite these quibbles, this book is a good introduction to one of the most fascinating writers of his times.

Interesting Insight Into The Mind And Trading
By Digital Love
A sort of cliche wise old man approach to learning trading. Such as, "To learn to trade the markets, you must first learn to trade yourself." Not much in the way of trading systems, but it reveals that learning to trade is first a task of conquering your fears. This is perhaps why it is so difficult for most.

This book fascinated me and had instilled a more profound passion and deeper love for the intricacies of Forex trading. It certainly seems to assert that the markets are a mirror of yourself.

A How-to on Belief Change
By Daniel Mezick
This book clearly explains how BELIEFS drive cognitive functioning. If you are interested in more accurately perceiving object reality (rather than your filtered versions of it) then this book is for you. Douglas explains how beliefs filter reality. He then goes on to explain how to manage your beliefs, such that you become more adaptive and learn faster from experience. He provides specific mechanical steps for engaging in belief change.

This book is actually about becoming more fully conscious ! Douglas shows you how. Douglas confirms the findings of Ariel and Mack in the book INATTENTIONAL BLINDNESS. To appreciate this book, you really do have to understand the IB phenomenon as described in that book...

An earlier reviewer quotes this from the book, poking fun at it:

"Our committed expectations about the future will act as a force on our perception of market information to control its flow into our mental system in such a way as to avoid a confrontation with anything that doesn't conform with what we already believe is possible."

What Douglas is saying is simple: predictions are beliefs, and you will automatically ignore data that invalidates your beliefs. Beliefs, including predictions and judgments, are in fact filtering your perception of objective reality. This means that what you believe has everything to do with what you notice or perceive.

This book is actually a classic, from a layman, on cognition and cognitive process. The biggest contribution to cognitive science here is the coverage of fear and how fear narrows perception in a very dangerous way for traders. Approach the book as a cognitive science book written by a very experienced and knowledgeable layman and you'll enojy this book tremendously. The subject matter is applicable well beyond the trading domain. However, since trading is so psychologically demanding, it is in fact a laboratory for understanding cognition and cognitive effects produced by emotions like fear. Buy this book if you want the inside scoop on how you actually are perceiving the world around you.

Pearls of wisdom - encrypted over and over
By MLo
First off let me assure you that Mark Douglas deserves all the generally positive reviews he's received for this book and for "Trading in the Zone." What Douglas has to share is essential, extremely valuable information for both aspiring and veteran traders alike. That said, stand warned that Mr. Douglas has quite a tedious writing style. He suffers (and thereby, so does the reader) from a particularly diffuse, circular, and repetitive style. He gives redundant a bad name. Here's a sample, you be the judge:

"Our committed expectations about the future will act as a force on our perception of market information to control its flow into our mental system in such a way as to avoid a confrontation with anything that doesn't conform with what we already believe is possible." Got that? Then this book is for you.

You don't have to worry about picking between The Disciplined Trader, and Trading in the Zone - Mr. Douglas is so repetitive that he essentially wrote the same book twice. Material from each book is either reprinted verbatim or repeated in a slightly different way in the other.

In fairness, Douglas is struggling to convey some very complex psychological concepts which don't easily distill down to catchy one-liners. Still, for all of his good things to say, Mr. Douglas would only benefit from a good editor.

Stick with it though - the keys to success are buried within. And then re-encrypted over and over.

Sargent Portrait Drawings: 42 Works

Portraiture is a demanding art requiring the artist to capture a likeness and render it revealing some hint of the personality behind the image. A two-pronged task, it requires great technical skill and an intuitive eye. In both these respects, John Singer Sargent stands out as a portrait artist of major stature.
Born in 1856 in Florence of American parents, Sargent showed artistic aptitude at an early age and was enrolled at the Academia delle Belle Arti in that city. Later he studied with Parisian artist Carolus Duran, acquiring the loose, painterly style for which he is renowned. International acclaim as a portrait artist came early in his life and followed him throughout his career.
Sargent's portraits done in oil are well known; they appear in major museums throughout the world. A lesser-known but no less respected aspect of his oeuvre, his portrait drawings are the focus of this collection. Included here are early works in pencil and pastels, and later renderings in charcoal, a medium Sargent favored after 1910. They have been selected from both public and private collections by art historian Trevor J. Fairbrother and attest to Sargent's technical skill, versatility, and dexterity in three different mediums.
In addition, these works reveal Sargent's ability to treat a diverse group of subjects; he handles the languorous beauties of the Edwardian age, members of the aristocracy, and the great literary and artistic figures of his day with equal virtuosity, capturing their characteristic mood and style. This collection includes portraits of Lord and Lady Spencer, Henry James, William Butler Yeats, Vaslav Nijimsky, Tamara Karsavina, Dame Ethel Smyth, and Jascha Heifetz.
Artists, students, historians, and lovers of portraiture will appreciate this selection of drawings by Sargent. Anyone interested in trying his hand at portraiture will find this volume both instructional and inspirational.

The more intimate sketches of a society painter.
By darragh o'donoghue
The Amazon page-listing for this volume is somewhat misleading - there ARE two pages of text (Selector Trevor J. Fairbrother's brief, insightful introduction), but there are also 42 pages of (paper) plates.
Often dismissed as a mere society portrait painter, the real poignancy of John Singer Sargent's work lay in the truth that the society he recorded was on the point of vanishing with the Great War. This sense is heightened by the form of the works reproduced here - drawings composed in pencil and charcoal. Their Cheshire-Cat-grin sketchiness, the way faces seem to materialise or dematerialise bodiless or skeletal on the page, gives them an overwhelmingly ghostly feel.
The most moving pictures here are of the now-forgotten heiresses, young wives, fresh-faced soldiers, and indulgent or austere parents, refugees from the fiction of Henry James, Edith Wharton and Proust, denied the immortality conferred on Singer's more famous subjects, such as Nijinsky, Myra Hess, Faure or Kenneth Grahame. Singer may not be as remorselessly analytical as his literary peers, but he has a wit, satiric sense and emotional empathy all of his own, burrowing out the melancholy behind the glittering facades. Singer seems particularly inspired by long, swan-like necks, as if their owners' beauty already sang their death. The notorious hostess Mme. Pierre Gautreau reclines on a sofa, bored and miserable as a beached mermaid; Nellie Huxley stares at us with sad, tired eyes.
Conversely, the portraits of imperious grandes dames, such as the Myrna Loy-like Mme. Eugenia Huici Errazuriz, are surprisingly sexy; while the Duchess of Marlborough flirts with gamine charm. Portraits of friends, such as the eccentric composer Dame Ethel Smyth, are more informal and playful. Androgyny is another favourite theme, while the unsigned portrait of working class Italian youth Olimpio Fusco glows with sympathetic homoeroticism. In fact, Singer's defining temperament, judging from this collection, is one of amused curiosity, as he sketches the garish and the gloomy, the restless and the resigned, the social and the solitary.
The sketches of notables are often great fun - a shadow-darkened W.B. Yeats as self-regarding buffoon; Jascha Heifitz in an intense tondo of fiddle-like scribbles, encircling a still white face rapt in concentration; Viscountess Astor lost in folds of Napoleonic grandeur; and a young Ernest Thesiger, displaying impish hints of his most famous future film role, as Dr. Pretorious in 'Bride of Frankenstein'.

Nice Book "Antiqued" by Amazon
By TominVA
[[VIDEOID:mo3I94AXB32PD01]]Well, this is my first complaint about an Amazon purchase. The book came just this morning, and it's pretty crunched. Came in a bubble envelope, but no stiffener was used so it was "antiqued" on its way to me.

Amazon should have known better. It's a thin book, paperback, with stapled binding - it clearly was not going to survive the shipment unscathed. Still, it's usable for my purposes (trying to learn to draw) so a beater copy will do. Really unusual for Amazon though. Most everything I get from them is wrapped well enough to be air dropped.

The good news: nice drawings! See the video.

Sargent Portrait Drawings : 42 Works
By hikari ^-^
If anything at all, _this_ IS the John Singer Sargent book to buy!

John Singer Sargent has once again exemplified his skills as an artist through his GORGEOUS portrait drawings.

Unlike other artists, Sargent conveys emotion - passion - with his use of line, stroke, and tone incomparable to any other artist. (Believe me, Sargent is the Artist of Portraiture). This book inspired my art teacher to go into portraiture. This is perhaps the best collection of Sargent's line work. These 42 Works are VERY resourceful for the drawing student and very enjoyable for the viewer/reader. Sketches depict a wide variety of people (people focused in the fine arts - actors, writers, etc.).

A majority of these portrait drawings are done in charcoal; a few are done in pencil. This book includes an introduction by Trevor J. Fairbrother.

This book is also VERY affordable (gotta love the folks at Dover), so if you decide to take one apart for use as reference, you can always buy another. ^-^

Buy this. You won't be disappointed!

Scala for the Impatient, by Cay S. Horstmann

Scala is a modern programming language for the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that combines the best features of object-oriented and functional programming languages. Using Scala, you can write programs more concisely than in Java, as well as leverage the full power of concurrency. Since Scala runs on the JVM, it can access any Java library and is interoperable with Java frameworks.

Scala for the Impatient concisely shows developers what Scala can do and how to do it. In this book, Cay Horstmann, the principal author of the international best-selling Core Java™, offers a rapid, code-based introduction that’s completely practical. Horstmann introduces Scala concepts and techniques in “blog-sized” chunks that you can quickly master and apply. Hands-on activities guide you through well-defined stages of competency, from basic to expert. Coverage includes

  • Getting started quickly with Scala’s interpreter, syntax, tools, and unique idioms
  • Mastering core language features: functions, arrays, maps, tuples, packages, imports, exception handling, and more
  • Becoming familiar with object-oriented programming in Scala: classes, inheritance, and traits
  • Using Scala for real-world programming tasks: working with files, regular expressions, and XML
  • Working with higher-order functions and the powerful Scala collections library
  • Leveraging Scala’s powerful pattern matching and case classes
  • Creating concurrent programs with Scala actors
  • Implementing domain-specific languages
  • Understanding the Scala type system
  • Applying advanced “power tools” such as annotations, implicits, and delimited continuations

Scala is rapidly reaching a tipping point that will reshape the experience of programming. This book will help object-oriented programmers build on their existing skills, allowing them to immediately construct useful applications as they gradually master advanced programming techniques.

Buy this one first

If you are interested in learning Scala, there are several books and online resources that are useful, well-written, and worthwhile. Start with this one.

I came to this book through the free sample chapters PDF version available at the Typesafe blog. Those chapters cover the so-called "A level", what you need to productively use Scala as an application programmer. It is very useful, but the Scala level hierarchy separating "application programmers" and "library designers" isn't strict. There is a fair deal of overlap, so you will want to get the whole book.

The best thing this book has going for it is that it is well organized. It immediately jumps into just the things you want to know when picking up a new language, while leaving for later the stuff that is good to know but that would be distracting to someone figuring out the basic language. That is not to say those things are omitted, they just occur later in the book. It doesn't just present everything at once in an indistinguishable heap and leave you to sort it out; the author has done the useful work of ordering the material in a way that makes the most sense to someone learning Scala.

The examples are clear and relevant. This book assumes you already know how to program, and so omits both the "object oriented class design" tutorials and functional programming "quicksort with lists and pattern matching" examples you may be familiar with from other programming language pedagogical material, except to the extent required to demonstrate language features. It sticks to the point of teaching you Scala, not functional programming or OO programming. It also dispenses with any Scala or FP "evangelism"; if you are considering this book, presumably you have your own reasons for learning Scala and don't need to be reminded of its virtues.

Good start, rushed ending
By SAS
After almost 20 years of Java, the industry seems to be ready for a reluctant revamp. Scala addresses some of the needs of the industry - combining the richness of Java with the brevity of scripting. So because Scala is fundamentally built on Java, a book that covers everything, perhaps called 'Core Scala', would be almost double the size of the author's earlier exemplary 'Core-Java' Volumes 1 & 2, combined! For this reason, most authors assume you already have a good grounding in C++ and/or Java before embarking on a book in Scala. If an author tells you otherwise (like Scala in Action states 'Most of the concepts discussed can be easily absorbed without any knowledge of Java'), he/she is probably assuming you are a genius, or is lying to push the book. Btw, just avoid the Scala In Action book until you really understand Scala. It's way too advanced for a Beginner. But then if you have a lot of experience in Scala, I am not sure why you would need to read that book.

Scala is a difficult language construct. Most Java developers I have spoken to feel that it is counter-intuitive (to Java). With this in mind, this book does an amazing job of landing the Java developer into Scala. The first 15 chapters are phenomenally well written. It shows that it was written by a person used to teaching, instead of disbursing information. The latter is the problem with the other well written, but dense, O'Reilly book 'Programming Scala'. The chapters progress methodically, with a minumum of back and forth references to chapters, which seems to be a challenge in writing Scala - concepts are so inter-mingled, that such references seem to be inevitable. You just have to learn to ignore the little 'Notes' and references. In fact, the reading was so pleasurable, I finished 15 chapters cover to cover within 2 weeks.
But then, the book takes a nose-dive. The chapters start getting dense. This is where the author should have stuck to the earlier approach of teaching. But the chapters start reading like references, with a lot of information stuffed in, almost as if the author was getting impatient to reach the end himself. When I reached 'Actors', I just had to put the book down. Googling, I found some excellent articles (danielwestheide's blogs, Alvin Alexander's snippets from his excellent 'Scala Cookbook' that I strongly recommend after getting Scala basics) that explained the Actor model so simply and so methodically.
To summarize, this is a decent book to start off with on Scala. Don't despair if the latter part seems rushed, move on to the Scala Cookbook or online blogs.

The genuine book of Scala
By Jacek Laskowski
I'm very much glad that I've picked "Scala for the Impatient" as my second book about Scala (after Atomic Scala by Bruce Eckel and Dianne Marsh). The book was a very pleasant and knowledgeable journey throughout the Scala land. No doubt why Martin Odersky, the author of Scala, accepted to write the Foreword. I myself wholeheartedly recommend this book.

This is a great book for anybody who wants to get his feet wet in Scala and yet the time is just for 384 pages. Plenty of examples after every chapter makes absorbing the wisdom of Scala from the book an almost never-ending endeavour. Don't skip them so you can fully appreciate the author's efforts to teach you Scala.

I consider myself a novice to the Scala language with a quite extensive, decade-long experience in Java and a bit of functional programming in Clojure and F#. Without much practice in Scala I needed a book that would guide me as if I'd attended a Scala course. I think Scala for the Impatient did the job very well. It was written in a lively style and the level of details greatly went beyond my expectations. I'm now using the book as a reference to turn me into a Scala professional and the often I read the chapters the more details I find (I guess it may well apply to any IT book, but only now could I experience the feeling).

The book provides many (if not all) of the most interesting parts of Scala for all of the levels of Scala experience. The book uses the experience levels that were identified by Odersky to distinguish the features of Scala that would be of interest to application programmers and library designers. I didn't pay attention to the levels, though and read the book from cover to cover.

Right from Chapter 1 the author encourages to write smaller programs as a way to learn Scala. If the steps to install Scala were to serve as an indicator of how the book is written, it took the author 4 single-line bullet points and the Scala interpreter was available. That was surprisingly concise. Should you need more, you're asked to visit the book's website. The author simply decided to waste no page for a less interesting material.

Every chapter begins with an introduction to highlight the main points. This may very well be used for less experienced people who only need a gentle introduction to more advanced features of Scala. Think of the introductions as an overview of Scala and the chapters as an more in-depth material. With the experience levels it may save you a great deal of (reading) time yet keep you abreast of the features of Scala you don't need to know now, but may need later.

The author quite often compares Scala to Java and C++ (sometimes C#) and although he said in Preface "I assume you know Java, C#, or C++" some experience with the languages might help, but is certainly not required. It just let the author skip "explaining variables, loops, or classes" (page xix). Full coverage of Scala is not the goal of the book and so is convincing you to use functional paradigm over object-oriented one (or vice versa). The author simply demonstrate Scala with notes about his experience and let you pick what suits you the most.

Regarding the title - "Scala for the Impatient" - don't get fooled by the "Impatient" part. It's not that the book skims over Scala hoping that you learn it without knowing few more details or similar. Quite the contrary, but the pace is well-thought-out and steady so you may not notice you're reading stuff you would consider out of your scope. Cay Horstmann gave them so many that I think I may have understood the reason behind the "Impatient" part - I often became impatient to apply the knowledge to projects, but couldn't simply stop reading as I was worried I'd miss parts that would help me sorting out problems even better (!)

And the last but not least, the book was issued on March 06, 2012, but given the recent changes in Scala I don't think it has lost its value (despite not being up to the recent version of Scala and missed a few latest changes). The version of Scala used in this book is 2.9 as the pre-2.10 String concatenation and a note about enabling continuations in 2.9 might imply. It didn't make the book any less valuable.
