About the Author

Eric J. Simon is an associate professor of Department of Biology and Health Science at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. He teaches introductory biology to science majors and nonscience majors, as well as upper-level courses in genetics, microbiology, tropical marine biology, and molecular biology. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. His research focuses on innovative ways to use technology to improve teaching and learning in the science classroom, particularly for nonscience majors. He is the coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections, Seventh Edition.
 

Jane B. Reece has worked in biology publishing since 1978, when she joined the editorial staff of Benjamin Cummings. Her education includes an A.B. in biology from Harvard University (where she was initially a philosophy major), an M.S. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley and later as a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Stanford University, her research focused on genetic recombination in bacteria. Dr. Reece taught biology at Middlesex County College (New Jersey) and Queensborough Community College (New York). During her twelve years as an editor, she played a major role in a number of successful textbooks. She is the lead author of Campbell Biology, Ninth Edition and Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

 

Jean L. Dickey is a professor of biology at Clemson University. She had no idea that science was interesting until her senior year in high school, when a scheduling problem landed her in advanced biology. Abandoning plans to study English or foreign languages, she enrolled in Kent State University as a biology major. After receiving her B.S. in biology, she went on to earn a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution from Purdue University. Since joining the faculty at Clemson in 1984, Dr. Dickey has specialized in teaching nonscience majors, including a course designed for pre-service elementary teachers and workshops for in-service teachers. She also developed an investigative laboratory curriculum for general biology. Dr. Dickey is the author of Laboratory Investigations for Biology, Second Edition, and is a coauthor of Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections, Seventh Edition.

It was half of what I ordered

I ordered this book but WITH the lab codes and guess what? They did not work. If you need the lab codes for your class DO NOT buy from amazon, they are charging you for something that doesn't even work! The book was fine but I ordered it for the lab codes and was more than upset when I had to rebuy the codes for $50.

Floppin' all over the place

Whoever thought it was a good idea to make this thick book a softcover, I tell you: it was not. The shear weight of this book, combined with the thin, slippery cover, makes it difficult to hold onto the book. Additionally, for whatever reason, whenever I put this textbook into my messenger bag (a regular messenger bag, nothing special), it always ends up bent and wedged under my other books. It's hard to even pull it out because there's no friction. I try to keep my things nice, but this book was the only one in my possession with dog ears and crinkles after merely one semester of use.

Asides from the obvious issue, this book was very informational and to the point, and it explained difficult aspects of biology in such a simple, succinct manner that I learned more from it than I did in many of my previous textbooks. I know I might be unfair if there is a hardcover available, but if there is not, this book can be a hassle. Get the hardcover.

A complete, but difficult reading exercise.

There is too much text in this book to be termed an atlas of surgery. Color illustrations would greatly facilitate the comprehension. Overall, was disappointed with the quality of the text. This book doesn't know what it wants to be, and sadly, does not meet either criteria adequately.

This erudite, cogent perusal of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm's Nursery and Household Tales is, for the most part, accessible to a lay audience. Tatar charts the evolution of the tales through manuscript form and the various editions, and offers what she maintains is the first complete English translation of the prefaces to the first and second editions. The Grimms abandoned a scholarly effort to salvage pure remnants of folk poetry, advances Tatar, and "with each new edition, the tales veered more sharply away from the rough-hewn simplicity of their first versions to a sanitized and stylized literary form that proved attractive to both parents and children." She demonstrates how the Grimms purged the collection of references to sexuality and incestuous desire but intensified violence, particularly when it took the form of revenge. In opposition to child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, Tatar warns that some cautionary tales may instill fear, rather than confidence, in children; regarding "Bluebeard," she faults Bettelheim for turning a tale depicting the most brutal kind of serial murders into a story about idle female curiosity and duplicity. Tatar (Spellbound: Studies on Mesmerism and Literature) chairs the German literature department at Harvard University. Illustrated.

Her observations are unburdened by Marxist, psychoanalytical, or pedagogical biases, instead resting on sound and thorough scholarship and careful reading and comparison of texts. I guess this is a book that goes on forever. I also think it's odd that it switched narrator in the middle, kinda takes the fun away from the mysterious guy since you know what he's thinking. Story is ok, I wouldn't recommend for teens to read. Overall, I don't like cliffhangers.

14yr old POV? Creepy!!!

I think with all the sexual tension between the extremely young pov and her very experienced love interest Silver, the author should have made her at least 17. I also didn't understand the "warning' before the explicit sex scenes with Silver? Why was that necessary to include, there was no reason to have that chapter in the book. I honestly thought it was just creepy!

Does this thing have a less than 1 star rating? Aw, it doesn't. I actually have to give this a star.

You know, if you want to watch some teenagers NOT save the day with actual humor and style, you could save yourself some time and have a Teen Titans Go marathon. Just saying.

About a tenth of the way through, I started joking with my husband about making a drinking game about each continuity error and paradox the author made. I'm currently a quarter through, and if I drank, I'd be dead of alcohol poisoning. I can't stop *laughing* as I read. Dig this s***, guys:
Amazing badass angel-kid (let's call her Mary Sue!) "fights with everyone" because she "has no friends and is miserable. Also she doesn't want to conform." What's she spend the rest of the book with? HER FRIENDS. And what does she do? Oh c'mon, guess! SHE CONFORMS. Stand up for herself? Nope. Mostly, she's a roving fashion reporter.

Oh, and did we mention those superpowers? She basically has every one, ever. We're making a half-assed bingo game here every time she pops up some new ability, with or without the aid of a trinket. So far we have about 16 powers worked up between us. Most of them involve her ability to name the designer of her friends' shoes.

Or could we discuss the magical bracelet that shows up at about 1/4 of the way through but wasn't there back when she was, oh, say, saving humans from harm? Did she just forget she had it on? Or was it a last second idea without any development?

My eight year old literally dictated (parts) of a novel better than this.

I'm going back to reading just as soon as I visit the loo. I've laughed so hard I really need to pee.

Also, I might just finish this book up WITH the drinking game. It might help to be blotto with these stereotypical characters and this wooden plot.

Quite a beautiful book.

My brother was formerly an aircraft engineer and a pilot. My earliest memories of him relate to airplanes. You'd think that would make it easy to buy him Christmas presents but not so. He's crazy smart and your average coffee table book doesn't really offer him much. This book is quite a beautiful book to look at but the technical aspect is what separates it from the rest and makes it a book I'm sure my brother will enjoy. If you just want pretty pictures this book has them, if you're after a little more this book has that too.

• In addition to the fiber-stained (myelin) plates, we now provide fifty new (Nissl) plates covering cytoarchitecture. These are interdigitated within the existing myelin plates of the stereotaxic atlas.
• All photographic plates now represent the complete hemisphere.
• All photographs of the cell- and fiber-stained sections have been transformed to fit the MNI-space.
• Major fiber tracts are identified in the fiber-stained sections.
• In the Nissl plates cortical delineations (Brodmann’s areas) are provided for the first time.
• The number of diagrams increased to 99. They were now generated from the 3D reconstruction of the hemisphere registered to the MNI- stereotaxic space. They can be used for immediate comparison between our atlas and experimental and clinical imaging results.
• Parts of cortical areas are displayed at high magnification on the facing page of full page Nissl sections. Images selected highlight those areas which are thought to correspond with those published by von Economo and Koskinas (1925).
• A novel way of depicting cortical areal pattern is used: The cortical cytoarchitectonic ribbon is unfolded and presented linearly. This linear representation of the cortex enables the comparison of different interpretations of cortecal areas and allows mapping of activation sites.
• Low magnification diagrams in the horizontal (axial) and sagittal planes are included, calculated from the 3D model of the atlas brain.

About the Author
Jürgen Konrad Mai studied medicine in Freiburg, Germany, Vienna and UT Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, U.S.A. Student and Medical practices in Freiburg (Clinic for Neurosurgery), Berlin and Düsseldorf. Dissertation ("summa cum laude") and habilitation were awarded by the University of Düsseldorf: After a period as GP in private practice (Titisee-Neustadt) he became scientific assistant and senior assistant at the C. and O. Vogt-Institute for Brain Research, University of Düsseldorf (1972 - 1983) and 1983 Professor of Neuroanatomy at the Institute of Neuroanatomy, H.-Heine-University of Düsseldorf. He served as director of the Department of the Institute of Anatomy 1 until retirement in 2011.
The main research interests are (i) the structural and molecular anatomy of the mammalian brain, especially of the human brain and (ii) expression patterns and regulation of terminal carbohydrates in development, cell activation and disease (III) operation planning in stereotactic neurosurgery. He works on a "Digital Brain Atlas for Planning and Interindividual Registration of Targets in Deep Brain Stimulation" and on a "Spatial Information Management Resource for the Human Brain". J. K. Mai has edited the catalogue of human brain sections from the Vogt collection; he is author and editor of several books, e.g. the awarded "Atlas of the Human Brain" with CD-ROM (Academic Press/Elsevier, San Diego), "The Human Nervous System" (Academic Press/Elsevier, San Diego, Amsterdam, 3rd ed. 2012), Funktionelle Anatomie für Zahnmediziner (Quintessenz, Berlin, 2nd. ed. 2008; Sensi Divini (ital., engl., ger, russ. eds). J. K. Mai is CEO of MR-X-Brain GmbH.

Milan Majtanik received his diploma in neuropsychology and training in neuroinformatics from the University of Bochum. He completed his diploma in mathematics and his PhD in psychology at the University of Düsseldorf. In his research at the Research Center Jülich he combined advanced analysis techniques in magnetoencephalography (synchronization tomography) with computational modelling in order to measure the impact of desynchronizing sensory stimulation on brain functions. His work on neural plasticity and desynchronizing neural stimulation provided framework for the developent of novel therapeutic techniques. He is currently focusing on the development of novel algorithms for high precision mapping and analysis of individual MRI scans.

Professor George Paxinos, AO (BA, MA, PhD, DSc) completed his BA at The University of California at Berkeley, his PhD at McGill University, and spent a postdoctoral year at Yale University. He is the author of almost 50 books on the structure of the brain of humans and experimental animals, including The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, now in its 7th Edition, which is ranked by Thomson ISI as one of the 50 most cited items in the Web of Science. Dr. Paxinos paved the way for future neuroscience research by being the first to produce a three-dimensional (stereotaxic) framework for placement of electrodes and injections in the brain of experimental animals, which is now used as an international standard. He was a member of the first International Consortium for Brain Mapping, a UCLA based consortium that received the top ranking and was funded by the NIMH led Human Brain Project. Dr. Paxinos has been honored with more than nine distinguished awards throughout his years of research, including: The Warner Brown Memorial Prize (University of California at Berkeley, 1968), The Walter Burfitt Prize (1992), The Award for Excellence in Publishing in Medical Science (Assoc Amer Publishers, 1999), The Ramaciotti Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research (2001), The Alexander von Humbolt Foundation Prize (Germany 2004), and more.

About the Author
Andrew Chambers is Professor of Corporate Governance at London South Bank University. He has been described by The Times as 'a worldwide authority on corporate governance'. Got a Yod, Read this Book

This book is a careful, through examination of both a yod aspect pattern as well as the effects of a wholly unaspected planet. I highly recommend it as such.

Other books place no great significance on yods, and do not explore them in depth. In contrast, this book does explore it in depth. First, noting that the configuration itself mixes 3 widely differing energies. Second, it explores the internal experience of those with yods (myself included). The author's description resonates with my experience, and I see it as well in a significant other.

In particular, there is a sort of vague insecurity than can't be pinpointed. So, there is a doubt about one's real capabilities and a reluctance to attempt action -- even when objectively a person is VERY capable. A similar experience afflicts those with unaspected planets.

The book discusses ways to work around the negative effects of a yod, and highlights the very positive things a yod provides to one's life as well.

If you wish to fully understand the implications of a yod, whether in a natal chart or by progression, transit or synastry, this is an excellent book to help.

A must have for an astrologer to have in their library

If you use Quincunxes (Inconjuncts) and Yods in your practice of astrology this is an invaluable tool! It is especially interesting regarding Yods in synastry and transits, which are covered in here. I do think having an understanding of the fundamentals of astrology prior to reading this book might prove more fruitful; but the book is explanatory enough that you could probably follow most of it as a beginner as well.

Poorly written and poorly edited.

I bought this book as a required textbook for the advanced pathophysiology class I am in. I am not happy with the book. Throughout the text (I have both the hardcover, that I bought from Amazon and the electronic version I bought from Google Play Books) there are numerous typographic errors. The book uses very stilted and dated language. There are many sections where the authors will begin discussing a topic, move on to another topic or aspect of the topic, and then never finish the original thought. The authors will list three or four things that are pertinent to understanding a topic and then discuss them in a different order than originally presented. They will talk about one thing being most important and talk about that thing last. I have never been so frustrated by reading a textbook as I was with this one. Before you apply to a nurse practitioner program, I would inquire about what text they use for patho. If it is this one, I would look for another program. It is that bad.

Good text, not fantastic, but GOOD...

Required text for class, so I don't know if I would purchase this if I were simply shopping for a text to update my library. Things I liked: color coded by systems; text broken down with the first system chapters focused on the physiology of a healthy system; subsequent chapters focused on pathophysiology according to gender (if warranted) and pediatrics; geriatric patients are singled out and covered in the system and adult chapters with normal age related changes or abnormal age related changes noted and discussed; pathological conditions are presented by introduction (description & incidence), pathophysiology, patient presentation and mention of therapy options; and finally, there are lots of fantastic illustrations and tables (I'm a visual learner).

What I didn't like so much: with a publication date of 2014, I would have expected it to be more up to date on hotly researched areas of study than it was (a very few topics were woefully outdated by many years, not months). While I recognize our understanding of disease processes are changing daily, mearly mentioning that a topic is evolving rapidly (epigenetics, for instance) would have gone far in making this text better able to stand up to time, almost helping to excuse any outdated material, if that makes sense. At the very least, it would have served well to provide cues that a current literature search may be warranted. Elsevier's Evolve was a little disappointing, too... Chapter reviews were exactly those found at the end of the chapters in the book, no more, no less and often lacked pertinent material needed for study; only the chapter "high points", I guess you could say. These reviews were downloadable in a Word document, though, so personal alterations to add content as needed for study was a simple enough matter. That's a plus. Occasionally, there were some good graphics to aid in understanding, but not every Evolve chapter offered them. Honestly, I got more from watching YouTube for clarification on some topics (reputable sources, such as universities and disease foundations, of course). Evolve, does offer practice quizzes, but they were painfully short and didn't cover all the material one should expect from an instructor's quizzes or tests (again, only the high points). All in all, though, it's a decent text given the content; and the layout was perfect for my style of learning and study habits. I'll be hanging on to this one for future reference.

Not a "straight to the point" kind of textbook...

I absolutely agree with most of the other "hate it/don't like it" reviews. I am a Denver university student and this textbook was, of course, utilized for our Pathophysiology class. It was awful. It poorly explained each topic. It bounced around in each section as opposed to sticking with what it was talking about and then flowing into its next topic. I do not know if it is because I am a "straight to the point" kind of person, but this textbook did not do that. I would HIGHLY suggest the study guide and reviewing the summaries at the end of each chapter if this pertains to any Colorado college students as of 2016. It really helped me acheive an "A" in the class in addition to other internet resources. The textbook just really sucked (at least for me).
