Q: Why Fuzzy, why now?

A: Mostly because I thought it would be fun. I wrote Fuzzy Nation when I was between publishing projects, mostly for my own amusement, and not as something I actually intended for publication. It was only after it was finished that my agent said "Hey, I could work with this," and started the process of getting it published. That said, any time is a good time to help people make the acquaintance of the fuzzies, and of H. Beam Piper, the author who originally thought them up.

Q: How are Fuzzies different from Ewoks, Plushies, and Softies?

A: I think they're smarter and more complex than, say, the Ewoks, who are basically just furry cavemen. I think in both Piper's tale and my own, the motivations of the creatures aren't always obvious or straightforward -- they can be devious for their own ends when it suits them. They're more than just adorably marketable teddy-bear-like objects, which is one of the reasons for their longevity.

Q: H. Beam Piper probably isn’t a household name to the new generation of SF/F fans coming up. Thinking back to your reading growing up, who else would you recommend that might not be hugely known these days?

A: In science fiction, I was a fan of Keith Laumer starting in my high school years; a number of folks see similarities between what Laumer was doing and what I do, especially in "The Android's Dream." Laumer had a sense of humor, and of irony, and a really nice way of getting across the fact that even in the future, some things will be absurd.

Q: If this is Fuzzy retro-fitted for the 21st century, what should we expect that’s the same and what’s different from the original Fuzzy fiction?

A: What's the same: The very general plot line and the name of the main human character (and the name of the main Fuzzy). What's different: The actual character of the main human character. My Jack Holloway is substantially different from the one Piper had, and many if not most of the changes between the two books stem from the differences between those characters. It makes for a fun compare and contrast.

Q: What did the book allow you to explore that you haven’t in your other fiction?

A: It allowed me to explore how another writer solved the same plot and character issues that I was encountering, because our tales were naturally so very similar. This was the writing equivalent of walking a mile in another writer’s shoes. Piper and I are different writers and I made different choices than he did in many places. But every change was another opportunity to walk with Piper and to learn a little from him. It was a very interesting experience.

Q: In what ways was Fuzzy Nation fun to write and in what ways was it hard work?

A: It was fun to write because it was no pressure--since I didn't initially intend to sell it I didn't worry about the commercial prospects of what I was doing; I just focused on the pleasures of writing for the sake of writing. It's an exercise I recommend every writer do from time to time. How it was hard: For many reasons, the contracts and business end of this novel were more complex (and sometimes more annoying) than it usually is with books. That was a lot of work to sort out.

Q: Do you have a favorite scene or situation in the book?

A: I like when Jack Holloway first meets a fuzzy. I play the scene for laughs in many ways (there's even a little bit of slapstick), but at the end of the day it's very much a "first contact" scenario, even if Jack doesn't know if this creature he's discovered is actually smart or not. Either way, it's new beginnings for both Jack and the fuzzy, and that's always a fun thing to work out in words.

Q: What’s up next for the Scalzi Juggernaut?

A: The Scalzi Juggernaut will continue to power through its tour, which ends in Phoenix in the end of May, and then it is going to spend a little bit of time doing nothing but relaxing with family and friends. Then polishing the novel slated for 2012 (already completed but not yet edited), and prepping the 2013 novel, not yet written. There are worse ways to live a life.

A good book but has none of hte heart of the original

I read "Little Fuzzy" years ago and absolutely loved it from the beginning. I couldn't get enough of the fuzzys and the people who grew to love them and protect them. I was excited when I saw this reboot because it gave me a chance to read about the world again and perhaps have more books afterward. This book is okay. I have to admit there were parts where I thoroughly enjoyed it but it didn't seem to have much depth and seemed rushed. I felt like there was much more "meat" to Piper's work even though it was shorter. My biggest problem with this book is the fuzzys and their relationship with humans. The fun of seeing humans start to interact with the fuzzys and learn about them and learn to love them was the amazing part of the book. Watching the fuzzys learn and adapt with their new humans was my favorite part. In this book the fuzzys just don't get talked about much until the end. They are a side note to an arrogant Jack Holloway, corporations and the legal process. Don't look for any extended writing about any of the humans interacting with fuzzys, it just doesn't happen. It's missing all the "heart" of the original. I was even disappointed that the names of the fuzzys have changed. You'll like this book if you've never read the original because you won't know what you're missing but if you enjoyed the original you'll be very disappointed.

Nothing like Old Man's War, but worth reading

Other reviews speak to how good of a reboot this book is to the "Fuzzy" story by H. Beam Piper. To me that's irrelevant. How good of a book is this in and of itself?

Good if you're looking for: plot twists, political intrigue, long complicated plans you don't see at first all coming together in the end, and courtroom drama

Bad if you're looking for: Combat/battles, honor & glory, a powerful/epic underlying meaning, some unique take on first contact

This is a book you can read in a few hours even if you're a slow reader. It has a very long comprehensive ending not typical of most books these days, almost to the point of being disney-esque (happy ever after and all that). If you're desperate for more old man's war, this ain't it and you need to look elsewhere.

The book is a quick feel good story that is probably best for a young teen audience that haven't been exposed to a lot of sci-fi. The limited pages/material prevents creation of rich characters like those in multi-book arcs, so you're stuck with stereotypes like brainy scientist chick, loveable rogue main character, and arrogant corporate boss. The complicated plot gives away too much too soon via obvious clues if you've read tons of stories (the clues kind of stick out like sore thumbs... you find yourself stopping for a minute to say "That's odd, why did the author include that observation in the story? Oh, duh, it's an obvious clue he's beating me over the head with."

All being said, I don't regret the hours spent reading this story. It was a good one for the amount of time I had to invest, and Scalzi's writing is good considering the tale he was spinning. Given the book's length, it's probably perfect for a read during a flight. Just enough to start on the departure and finish on the return trip.

Lastly, if for some reason you haven't had the fortune to read Scalzi's "Old Man's War"... do so immediately. That is a story that's powerful enough for you to remember decades later.

careful if you like the original

Skalzi is a talented writer, but he misses the mark on Fuzzies. I liked his Old Man's War, but not this one. He re-tells the first contact story in our new century style, but without the affection and warmth of the original. I prefer the characters and emotions of the original books by H. Beam Piper.

Dispelling the widely held myth of genital penetration as the apogee of sexual pleasure, Kerner, who holds a doctorate in clinical sexology, offers this witty, well-researched manual for "consistently leading women to orgasm" through cunnilingus. Loaded with practical anatomical information (the clitoris has 18 distinct parts, and more nerve fibers than any other part of the human body) and graphic line drawings, the book also touches on the less mechanical, more psychological aspects of oral sex, including the three assurances every woman needs from her lover to feel comfortable: (1) "you enjoy it as much as she does"; (2) "there's no rush"; and (3) "Her scent is provocative, her taste powerful: it all emanates from the same beautiful essence." Since studies show the average woman takes about 20 minutes to reach her first orgasm during a typical sex session, while men take a mere four minutes, Kerner advises men to delay their own climax and make oral sex "coreplay" ("the substantive phase in which sexual tension builds, culminates and then releases itself through the female orgasm"), instead of foreplay. Every 18 year old male should be required to read this book.

I thought this book was going to be about physical technique. But, actually it is about slowing down to take a hour or longer, to delay the male's gratification, to learn to read your partner's reactions, to give pleasure without any time table or deadline, to really care deeply for another human being, to enjoy the moment, to not be offended by the smell or taste or feel of your partner, to fully enjoy just being together with another person, to be attracted to the person and want them to enjoy the time together, to have go through all stages in order to reach orgasm and then have a cooling down period of closeness. It really is a book about loving and caring. It is not just about the physical sexual technique or how to get the job done quickly or hooking up with a stranger every Saturday night. The best sex is with someone you really care about and that you take the time at a leisure pace to enjoy sharing an experience. It is sharing and caring at the deepest level.

Bought this as a gift for my wife (not the book silly). It's helped me be smarter in the intimacy realm. I was never afraid to "go-down" and actually quite enjoy it, but was always worried I wasn't doing things right. Well, this book confirmed that and has made me an expert. Wife gives it two thumbs up, all day, everyday. Go for it fellows!

Mandatory. Plain and simple.

If you love your wife (and your penis) you must read this book. It changes everything. The female anatomy is truly amazing and this book introduced me to the fantastic and splendor that is the vagina a a way that I was completely ignorant too. I appreciate my wife's body on a much more intimate level now. She loves me loving her body on a different scale too. It's a wonderful, eye opening, how to, in the art of cuninglingus.

About the Author

Josh R. Gerow earned his BS in psychology at the University of Buffalo and his PhD in experimental psychology at the University of Tennessee. A college professor for more than 40 years, he conducts research and continues to teach courses at Indiana University—Purdue University at Fort Wayne. He is also the author (or coauthor) of sixteen editions of introductory psychology textbooks.

 

Kenneth S. Bordens earned his BA in psychology from Farleigh Dickinson University and his MA and PhD in social psychology from the University of Toledo. He has taught at Indiana University—Purdue University at Fort Wayne for the past 30 years. The author of a number of psychology textbooks, he is currently writing a text on statistics.

 

Evelyn Blanch-Payne earned her PhD in educational psychology from Kent State University. The recipient of numerous teaching awards, she was also recently listed among the Great Women of the 21st Century. She teaches psychology at Clark Atlanta University.

Ludwig Bemelmans introduces little Madeline to the world

I have had several occasions to read "Madeline" over the years, yet had never read anything about her. So learning that she had celebrated her 60th birthday was something of a surprise because I did not think of this first story of that irrepressible little girl as something that was first published on the eve of World War II. But the bigger surprise was learning that "Madeline" was not originally written and published in France, which I had always assumed was the case. That means all of those times I was reading this book and wondering what it would read like in the orignal French, I was completely off the mark. Live and learn.

Ludwig Bemelmans was actually born in 1898 in that part of the Tyrol which is now known as Merano, Italy, and came to the United States in 1914. A painter and illustrator, Bemelmans contributed covers to "The New Yorker," and also started writing fiction. His first children's book, "Hansi," was published in 1934. A world traveler and true cosmopolite, Bemelmans wrote and illustrated "Madeline" in 1939 but had trouble finding a publisher because most editors felt that despite its humorous verse and simple artwork the book was too sophisticated for children (Soon & Schuster originally published the book, although the rest of the series would be published by Viking, Bemelmans usual publisher). Bemelmans named his most popular creation for his wife, Madeleine Freund, whom he had married in 1935. They had a daughter named Barbara, who would provide inspiration for some of the Madeline books.

Thinking that this book was originally written and published in France is a reasonable conclusion given all of the Paris scenes Bemelmans pictures in his book. You have the Eiffel Tower on the cover and in one of the illustrations, the lady feeding the horse is in front of the Paris Opera House, the gendarme chases the jewel thief across the Place Vendome, the wounded soldier is at the Hotel des Invalides, the children visit Notre Dame in the rain and the Gardens at the Luxembourg on the sunny day, they sake in front of the Church of the Sacre Coeur, and the man feeding the birds is in the Tuileries Gardens which face the Louvre. These settings comprise part of the book's enduring charm. I always remember the yellow pages that represent "the old house in Paris that was covered with vines," especially since yellow is also the color of the hats, coats, and often the dresses that the "twelve little girls in two straight lines" wear. Yellow is also the color of Madeline's hair in this one, although that will change in future books. But Bemelmans also takes full advantage of the complete palette when he does the scenes that happen out and about Paris (and children like him because he colors outside the lines, just like they do).

Still, in the end the prime attraction is Madeline, who is the smallest one of the twelve girls. But Madeline "was not afraid of mice," just said "Pooh-pooh" to the tiger in the zoo, and knew how to frighten Miss Clavel more than anybody else. Madeline is smart, says what she thinks, and is she is a bit disobedient that is just another reason to love her. After all, she is part of a literary family of similar young girls that go back to Anne Shirley in the "Anne of Green Gables" books and Jo March in "Little Women" (Age them and I suppose you end up with Scarlett O'Hara). Perhaps not all little girls would be as brave as Madeline when they are rushed out to the hospital in the middle of the night for an emergency appendectomy, but I suspect most young girls would like to think that they would be as brave and that they would show off the scar on their stomach with as much élan as Madeline.

The classic start of the Madeline series

A short children's story about a young girl who lives with eleven other girls in a home in Paris and who has to go to the hospital to have her appendix removed. It was a 1940 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustration in a book for children. This book, and others in the Madeline series, have become classics in children literature and every serious student of children literature should have it on their shelves. Children love these books.

As a child, some of my favorite books were the Madeline stories. This is the first in the series, and it sets a wonderful tone. The illustrations are wonderful, and it's fun to see illustrations of actual Parisian landmarks such as the Opera, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and Tulleries. The story is fun, fast and catchy, and I used to wish that I was one of the little girls standing amongst the two straight lines lead by Miss Clavel.
This book is not just for little girls. Boys can enjoy the story as well.

About the Author
Donald Cruickshank received his degrees from the State University College at Buffalo, NY, and University of Rochester. After stints as a teacher, coach, supervisor, and principal in the Rochester schools, as he began a college teaching and administrative career that took him to SUNY Brockport, the University of Tennessee, Wheelock College, and The Ohio State University. The author of over 100 chapters, articles, and encyclopedia entries, this is his eighth book. He is best known for his pioneering efforts in developing simulations and reflective teaching. Kim Metcalf is director of the Teacher Education Laboratory at Indiana University, Bloomington, and associate professor of curriculum and instruction. He was awarded his M.A. and PH.D. in teacher education and educational research and evaluation from The Ohio State University. Dr. Metcalf is a former music teacher who worked with students in grades K to 12, primarily in instrumental music. His major responsibilities now focus on designing, providing, and evaluating preservice teacher education. He is coauthor of the chapter "Training within Teacher Preparation" in the Handbook of Research on the Teacher Education, and is contributor to the International Encyclopedia of Education. Deborah Bainer is associate professor of education at The Ohio State University, Mansfield campus, where she coordinates the teacher preparation programs. She received her B.S. in biology from Geneva College and her M.S. in environmental education and Ph.D. in Teacher Education from The Ohio State University. She taught middle school and high school science in the U.S. and in Asia, and formerly chaired the education department at Biola University. Currently her teaching responsibilities involve general pedagogy, supervision, and science and social studies methods. Dr. Bainer has authored numerous articles and book chapters reflecting her research in teacher professional development through partnerships, teacher reflectivity, and effective multicultural instruction.

A promising and enjoyable read!

I enjoy reading Indian mythology based stories and when I heard about this one, I knew I just had to check it out.

The title and cover are intriguing and enigmatic. Managing to successfully capture my attention, I was further lured in by the blurb that promised an interesting read.

The Curse of Brahma by Jagmohan Bhanver, at first glance, looks like it is the story of Lord Krishna but this isn't the case. Here we get the story of Krishna from his Uncle Kansa's perspective along with a parallel story line of the star pupil of Lord Brahma who was exiled by his teacher and who went on to become the most feared evil Lord.

The story starts in a promising manner and I was instantly engaged in the action. The author has a fluid style of writing and managed to create a visual of the scenes and events in my mind. Successful in maintaining my interest and suspense, I stayed glued to my seat but while he managed to deliver a engrossing story in most parts, there are also parts where the story lagged and can make the reader feel bored.

The plot and the execution are promising but the story could have been told in a more crisp manner. Maybe, we'll see it in the following parts of this trilogy. For the present, I enjoyed reading the book and loved revisiting loved mythological characters and reading their stories from a fresh perspective.

I don't want to give away too much of the story with you but if you love reading about Gods and want to visit a time that was magical and so very different from our present world then give this book a chance. 3.5 out of 5 to The Curse of Brahma from me. I look forward to reading the other parts of this trilogy and feel Jagmohan is a talented author, whose books I would be checking out in the future.

MYTHOLOGY RETOLD

Story-line- Interesting and thought-provoking, the book blends facts with fiction beautifully. Kansa one of the most hated characters of Indian mythology, is depicted in a different light making one empathize with him. Another important character, in fact the main protagonist i.e.Amartya Kalyanesu, also sets us thinking. One wonders who is evil, the one who’s acts do not augur well for others like the Dark Lord or the one who is actually the root cause of all troubles i.e. Lord Brahma in this novel? The book is in fact an eye-opener. One realizes that neither the Dark Lord nor Kansa were evil. In fact they were pure of heart. It was circumstances or should I say the deeds of others that made them turn evil. In short the story draws our attention to the havoc that just one person’s folly or lack of control on one’s anger can wreak.

The story has some interesting twists and turns that keep the reader bound. The chain of events also brings to light some stories hitherto unknown to many. There are some portions where one can’t help a smile light up the face. Devaki’s undying love for brother Kansa and the latter’s affection and care for the former moisten the eyes at places. One is forced to rethink about ones perception of Kansa as a tyrant. He evokes sympathy at places.

One portion that I particularly liked was that which has Lord Shiva chiding Lord Brahma when the latter comes to him with a request to destroy the Dark Lord. It felt real and down-to-earth. Here Lord Brahma’s position is that of the errant child. We can literally visualise his discomfort when interacting with Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva dons the role of the father figure who takes his ward to task but at the same time guides him and assures him that he’s there to help him clear the mess that the latter has created, should the situation demand.

Characterization- Wonderful! The characters are presented with all their imperfections thus making it easy for one to relate to them, their actions and thought process. Even Lord Brahma the creator, is not spared. His anger, his worries, his discomfort all make him easily relatable. The only thing that left me confused at times was the sheer size of the cast.

Language & Pace- Language is simple, crisp and lucid. One can’t help but marvel at the way the author has woven the story. As the story progresses one can clearly visualise the scenes and actions unfold. Pace is perfect. At no point did I feel my interest wane.

There is no other character that I hated as much as him

The success of a book is ascertained by the fact that the reader is able to visualize the story as happening in front of their eyes. In this case I was transported to the era of the Dark Lord. I felt every emotion that the characters were going through acutely;the anger of the Dark Lord at the betrayal faced by him, the desperation of Kansa, the pain of Ugrasen and much more. Kansa deserves a special mention here. While growing up, I have read the Mahabharata countless times. There is no other character that I hated as much as him. He was the man who killed all his sisters children. But, after reading the 'Curse of Brahma' I felt only sorrow at his fate. A man who is an unwitting victim of someone else's machinations.The point is that the author's characterization is so powerful that it has been able to erode years of conditioning.
The book also throws up a number of pertinent questions. Is evil really evil and vice versa or is life a play of events where we are playing a part. To summarize, it is an intense read, great characterization and an example of classy writing. If I say anything more, I may reveal the plot which will be a gross disservice to the author. So, go ahead and read for yourself, for it will be time worth spent.
